Summary
Robert Pickering gives his views on why functional programming is important and why Microsoft is investing in developing F# from a research project in a product. We look at some of the opportunities to that F# is going to create by enable teams of researchers and mathematical modelers to cooperate more closely with application and operation people. This will be illustrated with some examples taken from “Collective Intelligence” using F# to process raw data collected from the internet to produce intelligence recommendations.
Bio
Robert is a software engineer and published technical author. As a Microsoft MVP he is acknowledged as one of the leading experts in F#, a technology spearheading Microsoft’s campaign to make multi-thread programming easier, and has been invited to speak at prestigious events such as Microsoft TechEd, JAOO, and TechDays and has also appeared on channel9.msdn.com. His book Foundations of F# was published in May 2007 by a-press. In his 10 year career he has participated in a wide range of projects building large scale systems on the Microsoft .NET platform. He has experience in both consulting and working as an engineer for a software house.
