How To Be Normal - A Guide For Developers

At some point in every software project involving a database it becomes necessary for the developers who created (or inherited) the project to step back and take a look at their database. Many projects have a database schema that has evolved over time, with columns added here and tables added there, increasing complexity and often adding redundancy. Super-tables grow with more and more columns making ALTERs slow and backups difficult.

In this session MySQL author and speaker Mike Hillyer will guide the audience through the principles of database normalization and review some common normalization scenarios encountered by many application developers.

Tim presents the architecture that he designed for one of his clients. The system collects data from thousands of cell phones and matches the data acoustically with reference data that is collected via a different process.

The requirements include data integrity but not high availability, so he was able to compromise in a way that significantly reduced cost and complexity.

Silverlight: Delivering Parameterized Silverlight Content With Php

This video demonstrates how PHP can be used to generate XAML which is then delivered to a Silverlight front end. A XAML Generator was written in PHP, and this fronts a MySQL database. Queries to the database can be triggered from the Silverlight front end, and these result in XAML being constructed from a template on the server. It demonstrates how dynamic front ends can be assembled server side due to the fact that XAML is XML, and how Silverlight can be used with disparate back-ends, including PHP-based ones. We call it SIMP (Silverlight IIS MySQL PHP)
