Prince XML: Generating High Quality PDFs from HTML + CSS

ABSTRACT

Please welcome Håkon Lie and Michael Day, who will be presenting Prince XML.

Prince Overview: Prince is a computer program that converts XML and HTML into PDF documents. Prince can read many XML formats, including XHTML and SVG. Prince formats documents according to style sheets written in CSS.

Dynamic data-driven documents: Prince is an ideal printing component for server-based software such as web applications and database systems. Using Prince, data in XML can easily be converted to PDF documents that can be printed, archived or downloaded over the web.

Electronic publishing: Prince can also be used by authors and publishers to typeset and print documents written in HTML, XHTML or one of the many XML-based document formats. Prince is capable of formatting academic papers, scientific journals, novels, and books with extensive illustrations.

Håkon Wium Lie, YesLogic Director: Håkon is a web pioneer, having proposed CSS while working with Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1994. Håkon became a devotee when he found that Prince could format his book on CSS (co-authored with Bert Bos) and his PhD thesis. Håkon is a graduate of MIT's Media Lab and is also the CTO of Opera Software.

Speaker: Michael Day
Michael Day, YesLogic CEO: Michael is the system architect for Prince. He has implemented the CSS processing module, which supports many pioneering CSS features including CSS3 Selectors and Paged Media properties. In 2003, he joined the W3C CSS working group as an invited expert.

Nate Koechley: "The YUI CSS Foundation"

Nate Koechley is the author of the YUI Library’s CSS components — Reset, Fonts, Grids, and Base. Nate has been at Yahoo since 2001 where he was among the first pure web developers. During the past six years, he’s helped guide the formation of a vibrant frontend discipline at Yahoo built around a commitment to professionalism, standards, and performance. In 2005, Nate was among the first engineers to join the YUI team and he was instrumental in making YUI available as a free open-source project in 2006. In addition to engineering our CSS components, Nate has been one of our most visible contributors at conferences, where he’s spokeon on a wide range of frontend engineering topics.

In this 40-minute presentation, Nate takes you on a detailed tour of the YUI CSS foundation, its philosophy, and its usage.

Steve Souders: "High Performance Web Sites: 14 Rules for Faster Pages"

Steve Souders is Yahoo's chief guru in the art and science of web performance and the author of the YSlow plugin for Firebug; he is the author of High Performance Web Sites, a forthcoming title from O'Reilly (bonus points if you can guess which animal O'Reilly's editors chose for the cover of this one...). For the past three years, Steve has led a team investigating the root causes of poor page performance and applying the lessons learned to Yahoo!'s high-traffic, media-rich properties.

Joe Hewitt: "An Introduction to iUI"

Beer, music, Textmate, and YUI

In this screencast author demonstrates how to do a very simple tree toggle with JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.

Interesting specifics of this screencast are described by an author as following: There are times when you just want to see how somebody works on a daily basis. You know, just to peak over someone’s shoulder without them knowing you’re there. I picked a simple task (such as the tree toggler) and put myself in an environment that I am most comfortable in (beer, music, textmate, and YUI). And voila! This short movie was put together without me talking this time, but hopefully you will enjoy the music. Cheers!

Free refactoring tools for ASP.NET code in Visual Studio 2005

DevExpress today announced the availability of Refactor! for ASP.NET -- a free add-on to Visual Studio 2005 that enables very cool refactoring capabilities for ASP.NET code. The add-on can be downloaded from here:

The add-on includes the following ASP.NET refactorings:

Screencast: Build this in photoshop (Slide Show Project) - Part 1

New video from Jonathan Sampson. This time about Photoshop.

As promised, here is the first video in our Slide Show Project. As mentioned in this video, we’ll start off by creating the design in photoshop, then cutting it up and coding it into HTML. From there, we’ll likely proceed with some minor javascript (maybe some css), and then off to powerful-PHP for some Object-Oriented Programming. Stay along for the ride!
