How To Be Normal - A Guide For Developers

At some point in every software project involving a database it becomes necessary for the developers who created (or inherited) the project to step back and take a look at their database. Many projects have a database schema that has evolved over time, with columns added here and tables added there, increasing complexity and often adding redundancy. Super-tables grow with more and more columns making ALTERs slow and backups difficult.

In this session MySQL author and speaker Mike Hillyer will guide the audience through the principles of database normalization and review some common normalization scenarios encountered by many application developers.

Topics include:

What is normalization and what are its benefits?

What are the normal forms?

First Normal Form

Second Normal Form

Third Normal Form

And so on…

Normalization Scenarios

Relationships and Joins

How Much is Too Much?

This session is intended for a beginner to intermediate audience and is applicable to developers and administrators who deal with database design.

Enhanced Flash-Based Local Portals to the Google Map

Google Tech Talks
February, 20 2008

ABSTRACT

Cheryl Parker, founder of Urban Explorer, will present their patent-pending Flash-based "Local Portals" for the Google Mapping API. Urban Explorer's "Local Portal" enhances the Google Map with both advanced GIS functionality and dynamically-served polygonal-based map layers. Flash-based map layers are dynamically served via an underlying MySQL database that features time series business, real estate and demographic data sets. These data sets, in turn, populate translucent vector-based parcel, census and city-based map layers that align perfectly with the underlying Google Map. The Local Portals enable users to search, view and analyze aggregate datasets across time and space, by featuring thematic animated mapping and multi-criteria searches across multiple datasets. The portals will be distributed as web widgets through the OpenSocial platform, via LinkedIn and SalesForce.com. They will be distributed freely, but a minimal fee will be charged for data downloads, using Google Checkout. Portals will be developed for a number of vertical markets, including Small Businesses, Real Estate Developers, Political Mapping, and so on.

Speaker: Cheryl Parker
Cheryl Parker is founder of Urban Explorer (www.theurbanexplorer.com), based in San Francisco, Ca. Prior to establishing Urban Explorer in 1999, Ms. Parker worked professionally as an urban designer, economic development specialist, city planner and GIS web developer. Ms. Parker was also a Lecturer in the Landscape Architecture Department at University of California at Berkeley for six years, teaching GIS-based 3-D simulation for Urban Designers. Ms. Parker received a Masters of Architecture and Masters of City Planning from UC/Berkeley in 1994.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Design, Techtalks, Google, Lectures
ABSTRACT

Please welcome Håkon Lie and Michael Day, who will be presenting Prince XML.

Prince Overview: Prince is a computer program that converts XML and HTML into PDF documents. Prince can read many XML formats, including XHTML and SVG. Prince formats documents according to style sheets written in CSS.

Dynamic data-driven documents: Prince is an ideal printing component for server-based software such as web applications and database systems. Using Prince, data in XML can easily be converted to PDF documents that can be printed, archived or downloaded over the web.

Electronic publishing: Prince can also be used by authors and publishers to typeset and print documents written in HTML, XHTML or one of the many XML-based document formats. Prince is capable of formatting academic papers, scientific journals, novels, and books with extensive illustrations.

Speaker: Håkon Wium Lie
Håkon Wium Lie, YesLogic Director: Håkon is a web pioneer, having proposed CSS while working with Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1994. Håkon became a devotee when he found that Prince could format his book on CSS (co-authored with Bert Bos) and his PhD thesis. Håkon is a graduate of MIT's Media Lab and is also the CTO of Opera Software.

Speaker: Michael Day
Michael Day, YesLogic CEO: Michael is the system architect for Prince. He has implemented the CSS processing module, which supports many pioneering CSS features including CSS3 Selectors and Paged Media properties. In 2003, he joined the W3C CSS working group as an invited expert.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Design, Techtalks, Google, Screencasts, CSS

Big Ball Of Mud

Google Tech Talks August 28, 2007

ABSTRACT

Brian Foote is a research computer scientist with nearly thirty years of professional programming experience. He cut his computational teeth in the realm of realtime scientific programming. The highly volatile requirements present in this domain led him to an interest in objects, reuse, software reuse, frameworks, components, and, ultimately, reflection and metalevel architectures. He is one of five people to have attended every OOPSLA conference since 1986.

He has also been active in the software patterns community, and edited Pattern Languages of Program Design 4. He was instrumental in gaining the conviction of the so-called Gang-of-Four (Design Patterns authors Vlissides, Johnson, Helm, and Gamma) for crimes against computer science at OOPSLA '99.

Brian is currently a Senior Pontificator at Industrial Logic, Inc., where he has been spreading the Gang of Four's Gospel to a new generation of Googlers.

Though Big Ball of Mud has been Slashdotted twice, and is probably his best known work, this will be Foote's first live, full-dress presentation based upon this material. While much attention has been focused on high-level software architectural patterns, what is, in effect, the de-facto standard software architecture is seldom discussed.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Design, Science, Techtalks, Google, Lectures, Computer Science

PhotoSketch: A Photo-Centric 3D Modeling Tool

Google Tech Talks
June 26, 2007

ABSTRACT

Geospatial navigation tools such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth are exceedingly popular applications for exploring massive datasets. Their explosive growth provides impetus for photorealistic 3D modeling of urban scenes. Although laser range scanners are traditional sources for detailed 3D models of existing structures, the heavyweight models they generate are not appropriate for the streaming data that these navigation applications leverage. Instead, lightweight models as produced by photogrammetry tools are better suited for this domain. Unfortunately, photogrammetry tends to be a very labor-intensive operation, requiring manual camera calibration and tedious modeling processes. This talk presents the virtues of combining computer vision techniques and photogrammetry to simplify the 3D modeling workflow. The contribution of this work is that it merges the benefits of automatic feature extraction, multiview geometry, an intuitive sketching interface, and dynamic texture mapping to produce lightweight photorealistic 3D models of buildings. We present results from experiments in large-scale urban scenes.
