MWRC: John Lam - RubyCLR and Ruby.NET

As dynamic languages gain popularity, it becomes more important to play well with others. There are a tremendous number of useful libraries that ship with the .NET platform that Ruby developers can use in their applications. RubyCLR is a bridge between the standard C-based implementation of the Ruby interpreter, and code that executes in the .NET Common Language Runtime. We will look at the design of RubyCLR to better understand how to implement a high-performance and high-fidelity interop layer between dynamic languages and statically typed libraries.

John Lam is a Program Manager on the Common Language Runtime team at Microsoft. He's the creator of RubyCLR, a high-performance bridge between Ruby and the .NET Common Language Runtime. He's bringing the love of Ruby out to the statically typed heathens at Microsoft and beyond.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Frameworks, Microsoft, Ruby, Lectures, .NET Framework

The Scala Experiment

Google Tech Talks
November 7, 2006

ABSTRACT

Scala is a new programming language which fuses object-oriented and functional programming while staying completely interoperable with Java. In this talk, I give an introduction to Scala and demonstrate how it helps solving some hard problems in the construction of component systems.

Martin Odersky is a professor at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. His research interests focus on programming languages, more specifically languages for object-oriented and functional programming. His research thesis is that the two paradigms are just two sides of the same coin and should be unified as much as possible. To prove this he has experimented with a number of language designs, from Pizza to GJ to Functional Nets. He has also influenced the development of Java as a co-designer of Java generics and as the original author of the current javac reference compiler. His current work centers around the Scala programming language, which unifies FP and OOP while staying completely interoperable with Java and .NET.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Frameworks, Techtalks, Google, Java, .NET Framework

Silverlight: Using Ajax To Dynamically Update Silverlight Content

This video demonstrates a simple notification system build using Silverlight, ASP.NET, AJAX and SQL Server. Silverlight is used at the front end to present a rich UI, which is asynchronously updated using AJAX based on activities of different users in the system. You are stepped through the full solution, from the text input to the back end through the asynchronous delivery service based on JSON-oriented Web services and AJAX proxies.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Technologies, Companies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Silverlight, Microsoft, MSSQL, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

Silverlight: Real-time Data Update With Silverlight And Web Services

This screencast demonstrates how a distributed application can be built with an ASP.NET middleware, and a Web services back end. The middleware consumes the Web service and uses it and a XAML template to generate a Silverlight front end, delivering a stock quote. The front end combines with ASP.NET controls and AJAX in Silverlight’s windowless mode to provide a full UI, allowing the user to specify stock tickers which will then be passed to the ASP.NET middleware. It demonstrates how a full nTier distributed application can be built using ASP.NET, AJAX, Silverlight and Web services
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Silverlight, Microsoft, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

While Silverlight v1 doesn’t support a full control suite, ASP.NET and HTML do, and in this example you will see how to use both in a Silverlight front end using Windowless mode. You will see how to construct a Silverlight application, and how, using DHTML you can overlay content on top of it.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Silverlight, Microsoft, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

ASP.Net: How Do I: Write Code More Quickly with Unit Tests?

In this video we learn how Unit Testing can increase your productivity by easing the debugging process. We see how Visual Studio Team System can generate a Unit Test to automate execution of code that is being debugged, which saves you the time it takes to fire up your Web application and perform any steps needed to manually execute the same code. The result of Unit Testing is that you can write more robust code, more quickly.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Microsoft, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework
