Summary
Our good friend Scott Hanselman pays us a visit to show us the nitty gritty of some of his favorite Sysinternals tools.

Bio
Scott Hanselman works for Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager in the Developer Division, aiming to spread good information about developing software, very often on the Microsoft stack. Before this he was the Chief Architect at Corillian Corporation, now a part of Checkfree, for 6+ years. He was also involved in a few Microsoft Developer things for many years like the MVP and RD programs and will speak about computers (and other passions) whenever someone will listen. He's written a few books, most recently with Bill Evjen and Devin Rader on ASP.NET. He blogs at http://www.hanselman.com and podcasts at http://www.hanselminutes.com.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Broadcasting, Networking, Windows, Screencasts

This episode of GitCasts demonstrates how to setup mSysGit on Windows and goes through some basic workflow using the Windows Git version, in an attempt to partially dispel rumors that Git is unsupported or difficult to get going on Windows. I assume previous knowledge of Git here - this just shows you how to install and do the things you have already learned in the other screencasts.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Development, Windows, Screencasts

Eclipse and Java: Using the Debugger

This free video tutorial will teach you how to use the Eclipse Java Debugger. It is based on Eclipse version 3.3. This is for programmers who have completed the "Total Beginners" tutorial or have some familiarity with Eclipse and Java. No prior experience with the Eclipse Debugger is needed.

The 7 lessons are each about 15 minutes long and total about 1 3/4 hours. The lessons guide you through a step-by-step process of running debug sessions, setting breakpoints, stepping through a running program, and examining variables and expressions. Then we use this knowledge to fix some bugs in our code.

We use the "personal lending library" application developed in the "Total Beginners" tutorial. Each lesson is fully narrated. Along the way, we learn some very cool Eclipse functionality. See the Tutorial Companion Guide for more information about the tutorial, or look at the Lessons link to see the lesson outlines.

We learn how to debug programs written using test-driven development, running debug sessions using the JUnit testing facility in Eclipse. We also learn to debug standard Java programs. The lessons are designed for you to work side-by-side, pausing and rewinding the video as needed.

Click here to view Lesson 1. Click here to download any of the lessons. Be sure to download the Tutorial Companion Guide (PDF format).

The tutorials use Eclipse version 3.3 (Europa), released June 2007.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Development, Broadcasting, Science, Windows, MacOS, Linux, Java, Screencasts, Computer Science

From Desktops to Donuts: Object-Caps Across Scales

Google TechTalks
July 26, 2006

Marc Stiegler
Visiting Scholar Hewlett-Packard Laboratories

Mr. Stiegler is the developer of CapDesk, a graphical desktop system invulnerable to traditional computer viruses that first explored the secure cooperation concepts now being used by the Polaris secure desktop system for Windows XP.

ABSTRACT

In this last presentation in our series on the Authorization Based Access Control (ABAC) school of thought, we start with an object-capability desktop, CapDesk. CapDesk yields better security, greater functionality, and superior ease of use, all at the same time (and was the original development platform for the ideas that inspired Polaris, demonstrated earlier in this series).

Scaling out from the desktop to include basic Internet connectivity, we then look at how a CapDesk interacts with the network using the DarpaBrowser. In the DarpaBrowser, object-capability confinement mitigates the need for the ever-popular "critical security patch update" that now plagues all web browser technologies. The same object-capability infrastructure that makes the browser breach-resistant also enables the browser to launch web-based applications with functionality still not achievable with AJAX.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Windows, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

ITidiots Episode 48: BDD Lite Touch of Vista / Office 2007

This weeks video training screencast: Continuing on the theme of desktop standardisation, we look at customising a version of Office 2007 for inclusion in our standard Vista image.

Customising Microsoft Office is quite straight forward, we take you through the different ways of customising an installation of Office 2003 and Office 2007. Then we use BDD 2007 to build our Vista reference machine, deploy the customised install of Office 2007, then image the resultant machine for delivery to all workstations. Finally we test the deployment of the image using BDD light touch initiated from a WDS server. Once again pretty explosive stuff!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

This weeks video training screencast: In this episode we cover Exchange Server 2007, and talk about the new architecture and features. After installing Exchange into the ITidiots.com domain we take a look at the new management console and Outlook Web Access, the much improved web access portal. Then we randomly configure some of the new features and show you the outcome. Once again, unmissable!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

ITIdiots Episode 47: Introduction To BDD 2007

This weeks video training screencast: There are so many advantages to maintaining a SOE, or Standard Operating Environment. Just think how easy it would be for support your workstations if you knew that they were all from the same build, also users roaming for machine to machine would get the same end user experience which surely has got to minimize support. Microsoft BDD, or Business Desktop Deployment, is a great way to achieve a SOE. In this episode we introduce BDD 2007 and discuss it potential within the ITidiots.com network, then go on to demonstrate a Lite touch deployment of Windows XP SP2.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

This weeks video training screencast: Windows Server 2003 Release 2 contains some great new features that help you manage your file server. Finally a quota system that you can enable on a folder and not an entire drive, it even has email reporting! Then there's file screening which can be used to prevent files of a certain type from being stored on the server. DFS replication replaces FRS which means that DFS replicas now replicate in a controlled and far more efficient manner. The list goes on, but that's all you are gonna see in this episode.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

Eclipse and Java for Total Beginners

This free video screencam tutorial will help get you started writing Java programs using Eclipse version 3.3. No prior experience with Eclipse or Java is assumed. The 16 lessons total about 3 1/4 hours and are each between 9 and 14 minutes long. The lessons guide you through a step-by-step process creating a simple "personal lending library" application. Each lesson is fully narrated.

All of the code for the lessons is typed in "real time". This allows the demonstration of many Eclipse Java editor features that speed up coding. Code snapshots as of the end of each lesson are provided in the Tutorial Companion Guide. These allow you to jump in at any lesson and to make sure your code matches the sample code.

Test-driven development is used throughout the lessons, using the JUnit testing facility in Eclipse.

Browse the archive of posts filed under Windows, MacOS, Linux, Java, Screencasts

Following a talk by Microsoft's President of Entertainment and Devices, Robbie Bach, Microsoft introduced a panel of "experts" to talk about the role of marketing with the growing complexity of digital entertainment on the Web.

Microsoft has been ramping up its strategy to move much of its revenue-generating future to providing the latest multimedia experience on the Web. The company has invested significantly in the past several years in Web-hosted services, tools for cutting-edge Web design, providing Web-based entertainment on the PC and its Internet-enabled game devices, such as the Xbox 360 console. To prove his point, Bach proceeded to trot out a series of Microsoft partners and customers who were using the company's technology to build creative ads and services.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Companies, Windows, MIX07, Microsoft

LinuxConf.Au: Mozilla Extension Writing Tutorial

We propose a two part tutorial, the first covering the basics of writing an extension for Mozilla-based applications, and the second walking through a non-trivial extension which interacts with network services.

Extensions are a powerful way to extend and enhance Mozilla-based applications such as Firefox, Flock (which Ian and I work on), Epiphany, Songbird, etc. The technology behind them is also useful for developing standalone applications with rich web and network access, via the XULRunner platform.

The first, basic tutorial will cover:

XPCOM: The Mozilla component object model

XUL: The UI language

The way Javascript fits into this

Bundling and distributing and extension

Things to watch out for to prevent exploits

The more advanced tutorial will cover:

Interacting with a web service

Data storage

More complex UI usage

How to target multiple Mozilla-based applications

Security implications of dealing with web services

Both tutorials will guide the attendees through building a working extension. The advanced tutorial will involve some Flock specific features, but the extension will still work in Firefox, and only enable some things if it is run under Flock.

More information on what Flock is all about is available at http://www.flock.com/

Get started with Ruby on Rails in less than 5 minutes

I first started looking at Ruby on Rails more than a year ago. I even bought the first edition of Agile Web Development with Rails as soon as it was released. But I didn't do much with Rails until recently. I didn't want to struggle with setting up Ruby, Rails, Apache, and MySQL. I've installed Apache and MySQL on Windows before and it wasn't much fun.

But now you don't have to worry about installing anything to try Rails. InstantRails includes everything you need to set up a fully working Ruby on Rails environment. Better yet, with InstantRails you don't have to install anything. You just unzip InstantRails to a folder and you have everything you need to try Ruby on Rails. If you decide you want to get rid of it just delete the InstantRails folder and your machine is back to normal.

I think this is such a big deal for Windows developers that I created a screencast showing how you can get a new Ruby on Rails application running on Windows in under 5 minutes.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Windows, MySQL, Ruby, Screencasts, Ruby On Rails

It's no secret that events and delegates play a crucial role in the .NET framework. Without them it would be hard to handle user input or notify other objects when an action occurs. Author of this screencast get a lot of questions about events and delegates in classes he teach so he decided to put together a video that outlines the fundamentals of creating a custom class that exposes an event and a delegate. The video also demonstrates how to create a custom EventArgs class and how events can be consumed using C#. The code shown in the video can be downloaded here.

The North Face hired Fluid, a pioneer in online retail customer experience, to develop a retail kiosk using the rich media, animation and 3-D capabilities of Windows Presentation Foundation. This session walks through how the application was built, discussing design decisions and performance optimizing behaviors that were used. The session covers how the architecture of the application model as a whole was designed, and delves into the creation of the video carousel. The session is delivered by Darren David, Fluid's lead engineer on the project.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Technologies, Windows, MIX06, WPF

MIX06: BTB001 - Better Design Built Faster: Using New UI Technologies to Speed Development

Achieving complete separation between visual design, content, and logic has long been the Holy Grail of the Web design world. By keeping these separate layers loosely-coupled, they can be developed and changed independently of one another, resulting in faster, more parallel development and more manageable code. That is the vision, but in practice, achieving truly clean separation has been easier said than done. New techniques with AJAX and CSS, and new technologies such as Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly code named "Avalon"), have made achieving the ideal of clean separation more attainable. This session dives into the experiences and lessons learned by Frog Design while using these techniques and technologies on real projects. We explore the impact (good and bad) on processes, collaboration, and efficiency.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Design, Windows, MIX06, AJAX, RSS, WPF, Microsoft, CSS
