Making Great Decisions

Google Tech Talks
September, 24 2007

ABSTRACT

The phrase "work smarter, not harder" has been repeatedly ridiculed in Dilbert and elsewhere, not because it is a poor idea, but because it is thrown like a brick lifesaver to drowning employees. It's like telling someone to be happier, healthier, and richer. What people need is a plan for doing so.

In "Making Great Decisions" the authors show readers how to achieve their objectives. They offer a better way to look at problems so that solutions are easier to find.

Speaker: David R. Henderson, Ph.D.
David R. Henderson is an economics professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and a research fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford. He was a senior economist with President Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers.

Speaker: Charles L. Hooper
Charles L. Hooper is President and co-founder of Objective Insights, Inc., a consulting firm dedicated to providing health care companies with marketing and financial analysis to help them make informed decisions about their business opportunities.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Science, Techtalks, Google, Lectures, Recruitment, Sociology

Social Information Processing

Google Tech Talks
June 20, 2007

ABSTRACT

The label 'social media' has been attached to a quickly growing number of Web sites whose content is primarily user-driven. Examples of these sites include: blogs --- personal online journals that allow users to share their thoughts and receive feedback on them; Wikipedia --- collectively written and edited online encyclopedia; Flickr, Del.icio.us and Digg --- Web sites that allow users to share, discuss and rank photos, Web pages and news stories respectively. In the process of using social media sites, users are adding metadata in the form of tags, ratings and social networks.

While each of the metadata types above offers a rich source of evidence on its own, the connections between them create a treasure trove of rich interlinked data that will revolutionize information processing. The collective knowledge and opinions generated independently by many users will lead to new solutions to hard information processing problems. In this talk I will describe application of social metadata to four information processing problems: recommendation, collaborative evaluation of documents, information personalization and information discovery.
Kristina Lerman is an Assistant research professor at the Computer Science Department at USC and a Project Leader at the USC Information Sciences Institute. She received a PhD in physics from UC Santa Barbara in 1995. Her research interests include semantic modeling of information source, mathematical analysis of multi-agent systems, and lately, social web and social information processing.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Science, Techtalks, Google, Lectures, Sociology, Computer Science

W. Joseph King is the Executive Director of Connexions. Previously, he was an investment banker focused on incubating new technology companies.

ABSTRACT

A grassroots movement is on the verge of sweeping through the academic world. The "open access movement" is based on a set of intuitions that are shared by a remarkably wide range of academics: that knowledge should be free and open to use and re-use; that collaboration should be easier, not harder; that people should receive credit and kudos for contributing to education and research; and that concepts and ideas are linked in unusual and surprising ways and not the simple linear forms that textbooks present.

In this talk, we will overview Connexions (cnx.org), a non-profit start-up launched at Rice University in 1999 that aims to reinvent how we write, edit, publish, and use textbooks.

ABSTRACT

Sensors and their data will dominate tomorrow's global network. Location-tagged images and sound, captured from mobile phones, will intersect with data from municipal monitoring of city infrastructure and embedded sensors placed by citizens. Social networking applications built on tagged media are already flourishing. Intrinsically data-centric features will soon come to networking, providing low-level capabilities to verify location, aggregate sources, control resolution and implement privacy policies, all for data that originates in the physical world. As it accumulates such features, the network is coming back around from an expansive virtuality to the richness of the physical world, tipping towards human-scale rhythms and their cultural implications. What new design approaches are needed as embedded sensing expands from its traditional domains in science, engineering and industry, and the network becomes data-centric, full of observations gathered from real people and physical places?
