The Evolution of Expertise

Google Tech Talks
November, 2 2007

ABSTRACT

Does Web 2.0 represent a triumph of the wisdom of crowds, or the tyranny of mediocrity? The truth--as truths often do--may fall somewhere in the middle. New tools have indeed allowed access to new ideas, voices, and expertise. But at the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. In education, the shift from "the sage on the stage" to the "guide on the side" has been underway for quite some time. The same shift is happening on the web. Experts aren't disappearing, but their roles are changing. How can tools and infrastructure best support this shift in the role of expertise and authority?

Speaker: Elizabeth Lane Lawley
Elizabeth Lane Lawley is the director of the Lab for Social Computing at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is also an associate professor of Information Technology. Her current teaching and research interests focus on social computing technologies such as weblogs, wikis, online games, lightweight online presence, and collaborative information retrieval.

Before she became a technology professor, Liz was a librarian--with an MLS from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama. She has worked for publishing companies, software companies, and even the Library of Congre...

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Science, Techtalks, Google, Lectures, Computer Science

POWERSET - Natural Language and the Semantic Web

The Semantic Web promises to revolutionize access to information by adding machine-readable semantic information to content which is normally interpretable only by people. In addition, it will also revolutionize access to services by adding semantic information to create machine-readable service descriptions. This ambitious vision has been slow to take off because of a chickenand egg problem. Markup is required before people will build applications, applications are required before it is worth the hard work of doing markup. Natural language processing (NLP) has advanced to the point where it can break the impasse and open up the possibilities of the Semantic Web. First, NLP systems can now automatically create annotations from unstructured text. This provides the data that semantic web applications require. Second, NLP systems are themselves consumers of semantic web information and thus provide economic motivation for people to create and maintain such information. For example, a new generation of natural language search systems, as illustrated by Powerset, can take advantage of semantic web markup and ontologies to augment their interpretation of underlying textual content. Theycan also expose semantic web services directly in response to natural language queries.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Lectures, Computer Science

Navigating the World's Photographs

Google Tech Talks
June 13, 2007

ABSTRACT

There's a big difference between looking at a photograph of a place and being there. But what if you had access to every photo ever captured of that place and could conjure up any view at will? With billions of photographs currently available online, the Internet is beginning to resemble such a database, capturing most of the world's significant sites from a huge number of vantage points and viewing conditions. For example, a Google image search for "notre dame" or "grand canyon" each returns more than half a million photos, showing the sites from myriad viewpoints, different times of day and night, and changes in season, weather and decade.

This talk explores ways of transforming this massive, unorganized photo collection into visualizations of the world's sites, cities, and landscapes. After a brief recap of our work on Photo Tourism and Photosynth, I will focus on current efforts and newest results, in the domains of 3D scene reconstruction and new visual interfaces for navigating photo collections.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Gears and the Mashup Problem

Google Tech Talks
September, 20 2007

ABSTRACT

Mashups are the most interesting innovation in software development in decades. Unfortunately, the browser's security model did not anticipate this development, so mashups are not safe if there is any confidential information in the page. Since virtually every page has at least some confidential information in it, this is a big problem. Google Gears may lead to the solution.
Internet Scale Identity, Collaboration, and Higher Education

Google Tech Talks
September, 19 2007

ABSTRACT

Two of the most active areas of development on the Internet are the rise of Internet identity, in several approaches, and the bloom of collaboration tools such as wikis, on-line conferencing, Web 2.0 tools, and social nets. Internet scale identity is advancing rapidly in two directions - federated identity (ala SAML, etc) and user-centric identity (ala OpenId, etc) and offers some interesting opportunities for the integration of these approaches. In the collaboration tool space, the limited confines of individual social networks and the need for management across a suite of tools is driving the need for better integration as well.

Higher Education and Research have unique requirements to encourage global collaboration of diverse communities which in many cases deal with sensitive and expensive resources, calling for a melding of the social and
organizational approaches.

This talk will discuss recent activities in both these areas, and discuss how, properly combined, Internet-scale identity management and the collaboration tools present some fundamental new capabilities, both in Internet services and in human collaboration. These capabilities are a natural extension to the societal role of Higher Education and Research.
Google Developer Day Sydney: Mapplets: Making Maps Mashups Discoverable

Mapplets: Making Maps Mashups Discoverable
Presented by James Macgill

Thousands of Google Maps mashups have been created in the two years since we released the Google Maps API, but most of these sites are islands of information and few users know that they exist. We will discuss an approach to make these sites more discoverable by users around the world. More details will be provided at Developer Day.

James Macgill holds a PhD from the University of Leeds in the UK where he worked on innovative spatial analysis techniques. James subsequently worked as deputy director of the Centre for Computational Geography at Leeds on a variety of geospatial research initiatives. Among those was the foundation of the open source GeoTools library, a Java GIS toolkit for developing standards compliant solutions which now powers a number of other open source geospatial projects including GeoServer and uDIG. Before moving to Google in 2005, James was a Senior Researcher at the Penn State GeoVISTA Center, working on research in geovisualization methods and tools.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, AJAX, Web Services, Google, Lectures

David Heinemeier Hansson Keynote at RailsConf 2007

This year, DHH noted that he up until now had started all his previous keynotes about Rails celebrating how “freakin’ fantastic we are”. For this keynote, he thought - with Rails being well within in its third year in existence - that it was time to perhaps be happy with what we have.

He explained that new things tend to go through certain phases: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, and then you win - … and then what? “Ruby on Rails went through these phases way too fast”, DHH said, “I was having a lot of fun going through these phases; I’m kind of sad it is over.”

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Ruby, Lectures, Ruby On Rails

RailsConf'07 Keynote: David Heinemeier Hansson

With the release of Rails 1.2 we take a look back at David Heinemeier Hansson’s RailsConf keynote from Chicago.

In it, he outlines a number of issues that the Rails team was looking at as they moved towards the current release, the importance of opinionated software and of course, how he “learned to stop worry and love the CRUD.”

Here, briefly, is an outline of the talk:

Discovering Resources on Rails

Problem with Crud?

Get, Post and Clean URLs

Accounts, Controllers and Crud

CRUD is Not a Goal but and Inspiration

Controllers, Design Patterns and MIME

Doing By Hand Leads to Good Design

Get, Find, Post Redux

Q&A

What Is Your Provenance?

Google Tech Talks
June 21, 2007

ABSTRACT

Who you are matters, but maybe less than you think. Dunbar and his critics have pointed out only 150 people matter at most to anyone, at any point. Yet we focus on people all the time: Google makes use of this temporary focus in the pagerank algorithm. Social networking sites offer a domain specific set of links and metadata, which allow reliable discovery and tracking tools to be created, e.g. flickr pictures of snow.

Based on scientific communities, this talk will explore how people can act as navigational tools to allow interdisciplinary navigation, signposting the way from astro-physics to xeno-biology. We are comfortable with tags as navigational devices, but a tag means something to me, not to you. Knowing the person gives you the context to understand the meaning of the tag.

We have a word for it already "provenance", no antique dealer will buy something without knowing the provenance, should we care as much online? What makes good provenance and how can we make it subject specific?

Looking at technologies such as XFN, FOAF, federated identity and Web 2.0 friends tagging and social networking services this talk will explore how we assess, form and make these navigational jumps and how the coming age of ubiquity will force us to face the potential fragmentation of the internet into tag soup, served cold

Speaker: Gavin Bell
Gavin architects social software for the Nature Publishing Group. A key product is Nature Network which offers the benefits of social software to the scientific community . Gavin has worked in web product development and in the publishing industry for over a decade. He has also worked in academia; in advertising; for Dorling Kindersley and for the BBC. Large scale web applications covering identity management, on-demand media and social software have been the main focus of his work. Gavin lives in London and writes on nascent for Nature and on take one onion. His personal website is gavinbell.com.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Social Information Processing

Google Tech Talks
June 20, 2007

ABSTRACT

The label 'social media' has been attached to a quickly growing number of Web sites whose content is primarily user-driven. Examples of these sites include: blogs --- personal online journals that allow users to share their thoughts and receive feedback on them; Wikipedia --- collectively written and edited online encyclopedia; Flickr, Del.icio.us and Digg --- Web sites that allow users to share, discuss and rank photos, Web pages and news stories respectively. In the process of using social media sites, users are adding metadata in the form of tags, ratings and social networks.

While each of the metadata types above offers a rich source of evidence on its own, the connections between them create a treasure trove of rich interlinked data that will revolutionize information processing. The collective knowledge and opinions generated independently by many users will lead to new solutions to hard information processing problems. In this talk I will describe application of social metadata to four information processing problems: recommendation, collaborative evaluation of documents, information personalization and information discovery.
Kristina Lerman is an Assistant research professor at the Computer Science Department at USC and a Project Leader at the USC Information Sciences Institute. She received a PhD in physics from UC Santa Barbara in 1995. Her research interests include semantic modeling of information source, mathematical analysis of multi-agent systems, and lately, social web and social information processing.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Science, Techtalks, Google, Lectures, Sociology, Computer Science

Google Developer Day Sydney. Google Gears: Building Better AJAX applications

Google Gears: Building Better AJAX applications
Presented by Aaron Boodman

AJAX applications are at the core of web development, providing both opportunities and challenges. We'll be discussing some of the ways we can address those challenges in this session. More details will be provided at Developer Day.

Aaron Boodman started life as a musician, a mistake he rectified early to the delight of his teachers and dormmates. Suddenly finding himself with more time on his hands, he taught himself to program and began experimenting with and writing about the collection of technologies that became known as "AJAX" many years later. His work from 2000-2001 continues to be referenced and reused today in modern JavaScript toolkits. More recently, he is the creator of Greasemonkey, a popular browser extension that allows people to "mash up" websites using JavaScript. At Google he works on experimental web technology, and occasionally lends a hand on UI for products like Gmail, Reader, and Blogger.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, AJAX, Web Services, Google, Javascript, Lectures

Silverlight: Using Ajax To Dynamically Update Silverlight Content

This video demonstrates a simple notification system build using Silverlight, ASP.NET, AJAX and SQL Server. Silverlight is used at the front end to present a rich UI, which is asynchronously updated using AJAX based on activities of different users in the system. You are stepped through the full solution, from the text input to the back end through the asynchronous delivery service based on JSON-oriented Web services and AJAX proxies.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Technologies, Companies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Silverlight, Microsoft, MSSQL, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

Google Developer Day - US The Google AJAX APIs

The Google AJAX APIs
Mark Lucovsky
The Google AJAX APIs let you implement rich, dynamic features on your existing web sites entirely in JavaScript and HTML. Using this family of APIs you can add a map to your site, include dynamic search controls, or download and mashup feeds with just a few lines of JavaScript. The APIs that make up this family include the Google Maps API, the Google AJAX Search API, and the Google AJAX Feed API. This talk will focus on the Search and Feed API. The Maps API is covered in the "Developing with Geo" track.

The Google AJAX Search API is designed to allow applications to easily embed Google Search into their applications. The Google AJAX Feed API is our newest AJAX API. It is designed to deliver high fidelity RSS and Atom feeds directly to your site. This talk will walk you through the feature set of these APIs, will give you a peek under the hood, and will show you how our customers are currently putting these APIs to use on their sites.

Special Session: Building Better AJAX Applications with Google Gears
Andy joined Google in January 2006 and happily discovered that he had finally found the world's best start-up.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, AJAX, Google, Javascript, Lectures
