JMagLev: JRuby, sharing objects across multiple runtimes

MagLev was a show from the last RailsConf (2008). Presentation and demos of the product are really impressive.

Recently, Brian Takita asked in the JRuby mailing list:

JRuby + TerraCotta == Maglev?

What an idea! In the last few days I’ve tried to make something useful and I’m happy to have something to show.

The first demo runs with Nailgun. The basic idea is to share a single Java VM across all clients, so they can share some objects. The second is much more complete, as its clients have their own Java VM. There are many true interpreters running, and they are sharing objects through Terracotta. Terracotta is responsible for sharing memory in Java VM clusters and, despite of its slow startup, has much more to offer. The shared objects (hats and rabbits) could be automatically persisted by Terracotta, as MagLev also does.

I’ve patched JRuby and configured Terracotta to make demos run. I’ll upload the patches and configuration somewhere, ASAP.

Working on JRuby to make it run multiple runtimes (VMs) at the same time is being really fun!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Development, Broadcasting, Java, Ruby, Screencasts

Summary
In this presentation from the JVM Languages Summit 2008, Cliff Click discusses how to optimize generated bytecode for running on the JVM. Click analyzes and reports on Java, Scala, Clojure, JRuby, JPC and JavaScript/Rhino and points out several places where each of them could increase their performance such as elimination of FixNums, escape analysis and best practices for testing bytecode.

Bio
With more than twenty-five years experience developing compilers, Cliff serves as Azul Systems' Chief JVM Architect. Cliff joined Azul in 2002 from Sun Microsystems where he was the architect and lead developer of the HotSpot Server Compiler, a technology that has delivered dramatic improvements in Java performance since its inception.

About the conference
The 2008 JVM Language Summit is an open technical collaboration among language designers, compiler writers, tool builders, runtime engineers, and VM architects. The talks inform the audience, in detail, about the state of the art of language design and implementation on the JVM, and the present and future capabilities of the JVM itself.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development, Java, Javascript, Ruby

However, applying functional ideas can benefit your applications in other ways, too. This talk will describe the key ideas in functional programming, the functional-like features that Ruby already supports, and how you can improve your code by leveraging functional programming ideas.

Ruby supports several functional programming features. You can make variables immutable (value objects) and you can write functions with no side effects, meaning they don't modify any global or object state and all the work they do is returned by the functions. These characteristics may sound restrictive, but they eliminate common bugs, as we will see.

These characteristics also make concurrency easier, as there is no state shared between threads that requires synchronization! We will examine functional-style concurrency in Ruby, using the Actor model, for example.

Functions are "first class citizens" in functional programming (as the name might imply), meaning you can assign them to variables and pass them as arguments to other functions. Of course, Ruby already supports functions (methods) as first-class citizens and closures are anonymous functions.

Ruby DSL's are naturally declarative in nature, like most functional code. Code simplification is a major benefit in large, non-trivial applications!

Along the way, we will see a few other useful functional techniques, like ways to avoid using nil values and better use of arrays, maps, and pattern matching.

When finished, you will have a new appreciation for the benefits that functional programming can bring to your Ruby projects.

About Dean Wampler
I'm a consultant at Object Mentor, "Uncle Bob's" company. Recently, I've focused on "polyglot and poly-paradigm programming"; how to combine languages and modularity "paradigms" (OOP, FP, aspect-oriented programming, etc.) to implement applications in the most effective way. In particular, I have started using Functional Programming ideas to improve my Ruby code.

My open source projects are Aquarium (aquarium.rubyforge.org), an aspect-oriented toolkit for Ruby, Contract4J (contract4j.org), a design-by-contract tool for Java, and I've contributed to FitNesse (fitnesse.org), an acceptance testing tool for many languages.

I blog frequently on the Object Mentor blog, blog.objectmentor.com.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development, Ruby

RubyConf 2008: Fear of Programming

We developers spend a lot of time talking about how to improve technically at our craft, how to write better code, how to be more productive when we're writing code. But what about when we don't feel like coding? What about the emotions that often keep us from putting our fingers on the keyboard and working on that cool library we want to write or finishing up that cool side project we were so fired up about a few weeks ago?

Or to put it another way, why is it that some developers turn out so much more code than the rest of us? How do they maintain five open source projects (or more!) while we might be doing good to make progress on one? It certainly might be that they're smarter, or that they spend more time at it. But maybe not...

Maybe the reason we don't create more is that we're afraid. Afraid of not finishing, afraid of what others will say, afraid we won't know how to solve a problem, afraid that we're not working on the right thing. If creating code is even partly an act of artistry, then it's worth examining our emotional connection with what we're making. It might be time to start realizing that coding productivity is affected as much by our emotional outlook as it is by our technique.

If "fear is the mind-killer", how do we overcome it? How do we get past our fear so we can create something amazing and have a blast doing it? Those are the questions that this talk aims to at least begin answering.

Finally, why is it so important we conquer our fear and go on to create? _why puts it eloquently:

"when you don't create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. your tastes only narrow & exclude people. so create."

jQuery for Designers: Image Cross Fade Transition

In particular, Nathan Wrigley of pictureandword.com, needed a method one image into another mouse rolls over, and the slowly fade back once the mouse has left.

Image rollovers were the staple JavaScript nugget of the 90s, and for a lot of JavaScript developers I know, one of the starting places their passion for JavaScript. Today, rollovers are a no-brainer - either in CSS or with the simplest of JavaScript. Today's challenge is the rollover transition!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Design, Javascript, Screencasts, CSS

I have a large image (500k). I have a loading gif (little rotating circle thingy from ajaxload.info). I want the animated gif to be swapped with the large image once it's loaded. The event may be on page load or may be some button onClick...

This is similar to how a LightBox would work, except Daniel wants complete control of the the load event.

This tutorial will show how to load images in the background, and once loaded handle the event and create your own response.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Javascript, Screencasts

Veronica was buzzing around Montreal in Quebec, Canada and Roger was tooling around San Diego Comic-Con meeting celebrities and spending quality time with the Ayleen and friends at the October toys booth. (He also ran into Felicia Day from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog while he was at Comi-Con

Veronica Belmont... although according to last week's credit my name is also Roger Chang.

Ready to win our Badass Monster Gaming Machine? (Sponsored by Nvidia!) We'll have the full details soon; our build a PC segment will be delayed a week as the parts we order wind their way thru the Internets. Our apologies for the delay!

CJ's angry with Patrick! He says, "Patrick is sorely misinformed if he believes that a quad core gaming system doesn't benefit from the two extra cores." Sorry, CJ, just because boutique builders can get folks to drop cash on quad core CPUs doesn't mean they help much on gaming. Check out Look at ExtremeTech's Core 2 Quad vs. the Core 2 E8500. We're building dual core for now... then, when quad core chips get cheap (and there are heaps more game that pop with quad core) we'll upgrade!

This week's Freebie Download Pick: Notepad Plus Plus a nice clean text editor designed for coders that supports syntax highlighting for languages like C, C#, C++, HTML, Java, JavaScript, Perl, and PHP. (If you're hard core enough you can define your own language syntax!) and packs auto-completion, bookmarks, split screen editing, a hex editor... and quite a bit more!

Zac wants to know which media center software he should on his Mac, and wants to know what we think of Boxee. Veronica's got a full review of this slick (and social) replacement for Front Row that works with the Apple Remote.

Want to add music or sound effect to Skype calls? So does Eric.

We want your questions on video! Just record yourself asking a question no longer than 15 seconds, upload the video to YouTube, then email us the link with "Video Question" in the subject line. (No attachments, please!)

As an added incentive.... Veronica will be giving away Boxee invites to 25 people at random who email us with VMAIL questions!

This Week's Website We Can't Get Enough Of: GetHuman.com, one of the crappiest looking and most useful websites we've ever talked about. GetHuman allows you to figure out which combination of phone buttons will connect you to an actual living, breathing person that can answer your questions!

James emails from the UK with some serious concerns about P2P privacy "It's become quite clear that the government are teaming up with ISPs in order to punish anyone caught using filesharing programs; I've heard that DNS configuration, and encryption can be quite valuable in protecting yourself online, but I'm unsure where to start."

First off, we'd love for the Tekzilla Crew to email us with their ideas about how to protect yourself online... second, we've got some questions about how useful it is to encrypt P2P traffic, but encrypting email is quite useful. Tor is great for hiding your tracks when you're online.

As far as DNS goes... yes, you can use OpenDNS to help secure yourself, and here's some more info on that: Secure and Speed Up Internet Surfing with OpenDNS. BTW, Dan Kaminsky is -the- source, his website , DoxPara Research is chock full o' useful info,

Yes, the Pirate Bay Wants To Encrypt The Entire Interent. Good luck with that.

Daniel wants to know if he can upgrade his motherboard and CPU without reinstalling Windows.

Is that notebook burning your lap? Xander asks "Exactly what options do us laptop owners have when it comes to keeping our cool - besides moving to a colder area? I've heard about laptop cooling stands, but how well do these function?" We've got options for Xander

Macbook/Macbook Pro users should check out SMC Fan Control... anybody know of a good Windows fan control utility? Easiest Windows install ever: nLite. Go manual with your digital camera: ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. Send text messages from email or AIM. ChaCha!

Veronica's back from E3... she's got the scoop on the PS3 and Xbox 360, along with the big games, like Killzone2, Little Big Planet, Gears of War 2, Fable2, Fallout3 and more!

Nvidia ponied up for our choice of gaming components for our Badass Monster Gaming PC... we're building it on the show over the next fewe weeks, and you can win it August 16th! (Details to follow.)

How badass? We'll start with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz CPU, an XFX Nforce 790i SLI motherboard, 4GB of Corsair Dominator DDR3 memory, a pair of Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards in SLI, a Corsair 1000W CMPSU-1000HX power supply, a pair of Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB in a RAID 0 configuration, along with a 1TB Seagate Barracuda ES.2 [ST31000340NS] for all your data, a Blu-ray/DVD drive... and we'll stuff it all in a CoolerMaster Stacker 830 Evolution [RC-830-KKN3-GP] case. (We'll also have a big fat monitor and a set of surround sound speakers!)

"Who knew NOT using your phone was such a popular way to send texts!!!" Veronica got a ton of ideas from the Tekzilla audience on alternatives for tex/SMS messages... Wes had our favorite: simply send an email. If you format the email address correctly, it will be forwarded to the phone number.

Here are some examples:

T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net

Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com,

Cingular: phonenumber@cingularme.com

Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com

Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com

Nextel: phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com

We've got more of your suggestions on the show, including Chikka.com, Teleflip.com and a way to send text messages thru AIM! (Our friends at PopSiren show of Teleflip in PopSiren Bite #39... check it out!)

They call it a "Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation." We call it a magic free tool that makes slipstreaming your Windows XP installations super easy... imagine never having to find download and individually install all those updates, drives and service packs ever again!

This week's Website We Can't Get Enough Of: ChaCha. Veronica says, "it's a time saver if you're out and about and don't want to bother scouring Google for the answers you seek... but the real awesomeness comes from using it right from your cell phone!" You can text 242242 or call 1-800-2ChaCha!

Ryan upgraded his memory from 1GB to 3GB, but doesn't "notice the slightest difference in performance." We've got some ideas for him.

Riley wants to know if he'll need to replace his UHF antenna to get OTA HD (over the air high def) TV when the FCC turns off analog TV come February 17, 2009... it depends on the station, but some stations currently broadcasting DTV on UHF channels will move to VHF channels... and that spiffy UFH antenna won't be much use. Contact your local stations and ask!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Screencasts

Share your EVDO Internet connection. The best way to back up your drivers. Fix GPU Overheating. XBox 360 Updates! What -is- the point of Twitter?

You may have noticed this episode hit the internets on Saturday instead of Friday... Saturday is our new release date for Tekzilla!

Where's Veronica? She's at E3 checking out the new games. She'll be back hosting Tekzilla next week; we've got Roger Chang out of the control room and hosting today!

Xbox 360 Fall Update: you'll be able to install Xbox games onto the hard drive to speed up loading, Netflix Movies and LIVE Primetime (TV shows and movies from NBC, SciFi and more!)

Seagate has announced 1.5TB Hard Drives! (750GB drives are under $100 now.)

Backing up your drivers before you rebuild your Windows machine... we've got some ideas to make John's life easier, 'cause we hate tracking down drivers.

Tekzilla's Gadget of the Week: CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. Patrick uses it like an alcohol soaked q-tip in a can to clean particularly cruddy electronics.

Mark wants to share the Internet connection between the EVDO modem on his notebook and his iPod touch, other computers, a PS3, XBox360 Elite, and Wii.

No problem. You can turn on ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) XP Vista in Windows (and OS X).

Devin's checked out Twitter and has one thing to say: "I don't get it." Neither did Patrick till he checked out an alternative Twitter client (like Twhirl. And, as Roger puts it, "you need a group of friends online with you. Like any social network, if you don't have people to bounce ideas, comments or topics off of it can be pretty boring."

Want to hang with us on Twitter? Come hang with Roger, Veronica and Patrick. It's weird, but we like it.

If you don't want to be the router for your friends and gadgets, you can buy an EVDO Router, such as the D-Link DIR-450 or Cradlepoint's CTR500 Cellular Travel Router.

WiFi upgrade fun: 802.11n wireless router vs. an 802.11g notebook? Rob, you'll need an 802.11n WiFi card for your notebook for it to work, and, yes, it should boost the distance and speed you can connect from.

Got a question? Send us a video! All you need to do is record yourself in front a video asking a question no longer than 15 seconds. Post the video on YouTube and email us the link with "Video Question" in the subject line. (No attachments, please, post 'em on YouTube!)

Website We Just Can't Get Enough of: Pandora.com. It just might be the last music website you'll ever need... all you need to do is enter the name of an artist you enjoy!

Rob wants to protect his new phone... I can't wait for the Golden Shellback Splash Proof Coating to become a product I can buy. It's a it's a waterproof polymer that coats your electronics inside and out. As in your gear will operate underwater!

More traditional bombproofing for a an iPhone 3G? Patrick uses an InvisibleShield to protect the screen on his phone. OtterBox makes pretty bombproof cases... now we just need a YoTank for the iPod.

The dual 4850 GPUs in David's gaming PC "give up and reboot" whenever he does any heavy gaming, with temps hitting 90 degrees. Roger's got tips for dealing with overheating and power issues n your PC. Think fans, dual vs. single rails, and... well, watch the show.

Turns out there's a $20 plugin for Toast 9 Titanium that'll play Blu-ray disks on OS X... here's the spiel from Macworld. Thanks Kyle!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Broadcasting, Networking, Windows, MacOS, Screencasts

ExtremeTech.com's Jason Cross answers your Graphics Cards questions. Answer Email Automatically. HoverIP. The Home of the Underdogs. Macbook Pro vs. Blu-ray.

Heads up: starting next week, on July 19th, new episodes of Tekzilla will release on Saturday instead of Friday... same show, just on a different day. Sorry for the change!

What's the best graphics card for $200? Should I upgrade the graphics in my notebook? Is running a pair of cards in SLI worth the money? How fast is the 9800 vs. the 8800? I don't game... what kind of graphics card do I need? Will external GPUs be worth trying? You sent in a ton of great graphics card questions, ExtremeTech.com's video card mavin Jason Cross joined us to bring you the answers!

"I'm confused about the correct way to charge a battery. About half the sites I read say you shouldn't charge much, and let the battery run down, while the other half say the opposite, that you should charge often and not let the battery run down. Which way is correct?" Good question, Michael! If you don't want to kill that pricey Lithium Ion battery in your notebook, phone, iPod or whatever, follow our guidelines for charging your battery!

"Is there an email or IM service which will let me send sms text messages from my computer?" Sure are, Maxwell, and since most of the online text messaging services are web-based, it doesn't really matter whether you're on windows or mac. Veronica tested a couple, just to see what was out there and found that text'em worked best... plus it's free!

This Week's Freebie Download Pick: HoverIP, any easy way to access to all your network settings scattered around Windows XP in one easy to use control panel.

We received a few concerned emails about last week's Freebie Download AVG Free Anti-Virus, specifically, the built in Link Scanner function, and it's ability to spike traffic to unsuspecting websites... AVG has issued a patch that disables the more aggressive scanning done by Link Scanner, and says "Search-Shield will no longer scan each search result online for new exploits, which was causing the spikes that webmasters addressed with us."

This week's Website We Just Can't Get Enough of: the Home of the Underdogs, a "Tribute to the best underrated PC games of all time" that preserves and catalogs the early history of PC Gamging... right down to hosting the code for games that have fallen out of copyright and helping you run games designed for 8MHz PCs on today's 3GHz processors!

Nate wrote in "I respond to a lot of e-mails every day and most of my responses are the same. Is there a program for OS X that will allow me to reply to similar e-mails without re-writing or copying and pasting the entire email?" Veronica reccomends the legendary TextExpander, $30, which you can use to fill out forms, enter signatures, or even save whole paragraphs you can paste in when you type a short abbreviation.

Anybody know of a TextExpander-ish tool for Windows? Please email a link to: tekzilla@revision3.com and we'll share it on the show!

Jeff wants to know what the deal is with playing Bluray on his brand spankin' new MacBook Pro... there isn't a Blu-ray playback option built in!

Veronica wants to see more of your lovely faces on Tekzilla! So please please please... keep sending us your video emails. Remember make the questions no longer than 15 seconds, up load them to YouTube, and email us the linke with "Video Question" in the subject line. AND NOOOO ATTACHMENTS.

Will the security ports built into Jacob's notebook keep it from walking away if he leaves the door on his dorm room open. (No AC otherwise!) Yes... as long as the thief isn't real determined. Skitch. Get the best price when you buy tech toys and tools. Skinning your laptop, cell phone, Wii, PS3, Xbox or PC! Buying a used PC. Regular phone vs. VoIP vs. Digital Phone

Heads up: Starting Saturday, July 19th new episodes of Tekzilla will release on Saturday instead of Friday!

Steve's miffed: he wants us to point out when local shops probably won't have a product we review... and we've got some buying advice for the next time he heads for Frys, Best Buy, or RadioShack!

This week's Freebie Download Pick: AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0, free anti-virus tool that works great.

Alan sent in a video question, he's in search of something a little easier than using Print Screen or CMD-Shift-3 to take a screen shot... Veronica's all about Skitch, "one of my favorite new apps out there, and it makes editing and sharing screen grabs a total snap. Get it? Snap???"

Brian wants to build an audio studio for his dorm room. For under $1100. No problem: Veronica's got a list of gear that can get you some great audio for a lot less than that, starting with a good solid microphone, the beloved Shure SM58 and our favorite free audio editing and recording software, Audacity.

Bill's thinking about buying a used PC on craigslist.org, but doesn't want to get ripped off. We've got a list of things to keep an eye out for. (One thing we didn't mention: getting a bill of sale from the person you're buying from in case the machine is stolen!)

AT&T has (officially) announced pricing for iPhone 3G sevice... four plans, starting at $69.99 a month, says PCMag.com... is Veronica going to camp out for an iPhone 3G?

This week's Website We Just Can't Get Enough Of: freshAIRapps.com, a glorious repository of applications that run on Adobe Air. (That's the cross-platform runtime environment that enables programmers to make, for example, desktop applications like Twhirl, Patrick's fave Twitter client, and Snackr, a slick RSS reader. (It's also a wonderful resource for Adobe Air developers -- it has a tutorial section that covers all the basics for fledgling devs, as well as links to the tools you'll need to build the apps.)

What is the difference between regular phone, digital phone and VoIP? Anthony, we're glad you asked! POTS, VoIP, and Digital Telephony have more in common than you might think. Just don't ask us to explain how cell service works...

Fifty Free Songs? Sign up for a free trial at emusic.com/tekzilla! (And check out some of Veronica and Patrick's fave tunes!)

Patrick's friend is getting a new desktop for college and he wants to know "the best way to transfer his massive music collection from his XP computer to his new Vista rig." We've got some help for ya, including the scoop on copying files from his old hard drive that still has Windows on it.

Blu-ray on the Mac? Marshall is looking for something a tad less expensive than the $699 kit from MCE Tech. Fortunately, Roxio's Toast can burn Blu-ray disks... and the price of Blu-ray burners is down around $350. Now if 25GB BD-R disks would just drop in price!

Chris V. wants to personalize his notebook... it's too generic for his tastes. NO problem! There are skins from GelaSkins and skinit (skinit can decorate your PS3, Wii, guitar hero guitars, a laundry list of cell phones and MP3 players...).

Veronica had her Macbook Pro laser etched with a design she loves... you can learn how to etch just about anything with a VersaLaser in this episode of Systm.

ColorWare sprays solid colors consoles, mp3 players, HDTVs... while Smooth Creations offers up sick airbrush designs.

And if you want help painting your notebook yourself, or, uh, covering it with fur, check out Systm Episode 43!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Technologies, Broadcasting, MacOS, RSS, Flash, VOIP, Screencasts

A war is being waged between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The imperial forces are laboring tirelessly to stamp out such dangerous ideas as late-binding, and automatic memory management.

Based on long experience, such ideas are known to cause severe performance problems at best, and to bring down the Empire with errors at worst.

The year, 2008 Ruby vs. Java*, or ca 1990 Smalltalk vs. C++, or ...

The languages change, but the arguments remain. After a period in the shadows, dynamic languages have been on the rise again. Ruby has been at the forefront of this resurgence, with older dynamic languages tagging along. At the same time, hard-learned lessons from the implementation of these earlier languages are starting to have an influence on implementation of the newer ones. Witness the buzz in the Ruby community about "repurposeing" projects such as MagLev.

This talk will explore the history of the dynamic vs. static debate, and attempt to bring to light the reasons why many of the arguments against dynamic languages are based on things which just don't matter if the language isn't static.

I'll also have a few things to say about why things like MagLev make sense.

* Well at least Java has a better regard of GC.

About Rick DeNatale
I am a long-time object oriented technologies, practitioner, evangelist, and provocateur.

During a 32 year career at IBM, I served in various capacities, including the development of the initial proof of concept for IBM VisualAge/Smalltalk, a distributed implementation of the Smalltalk language, parts of VisualAge Micro Edition for Java (the precursor to Eclipse), founding member of the X3J20 Smalltalk committee, and many other activities related to Smalltalk and Java, and in the early decades of OOPSLA.

This gave me the opportunity to know, work, and interact with many of those, some known, and others not so well known, who laid the groundwork for what we do with Ruby and how we do it.

I've been a Ruby programmer and consultang since shortly after 'retiring' in 2006. Currently I am working at Near-Time, a software-as-a-service business based on Rails.

My sporadic thoughts, mostly about the Ruby language and related topics can be found at my blog.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development, Java, Ruby

We'll demonstrate seamless, bidirectional crossing of the language/runtime barrier. We'll show how to leverage Ruby libraries in JavaScript, and vice versa!

We'll talk about the approach Johnson takes to marry two very different languages, pitfalls and traps we encountered along the way, and explain some of our basic motivations: Mechanize integration, browserless JavaScript testing, and dynamic manipulation of the JavaScript AST from Ruby.

About Aaron Patterson:
When Aaron Patterson's not searching the internet for pictures of adorable kittens, he creates large-scale Ruby on Rails applications as a Principal Software Engineer at AdReady. He's an open source contributor, releasing popular Ruby tools like Mechanize and CSSPool. On Tuesday nights, Aaron can be found with the Rubyists from Seattle.rb.

About John Barnette:
John Barnette is a Lead Software Engineer at AdReady, a Seattle.rb hacker, and a huge fan of homemade beef jerky. He has contributed code to RubyGems, Rubinius, Rails, and a host of other projects.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development, Javascript, Ruby
