Ajax and design patterns : Do we need a client tier?

Summary
An Ajax application can go for several hours without leaving the original page. In this talk, Dave Crane explores ways to apply design patterns to the client tier, and how the use of patterns compares with the server-side. He examines the tension between maintaining server-control and delegating control to the client, and looks at the pros and cons of each architecture with real-world examples.

Bio
Dave Crane is a well known authority in the field of Ajax and web application development, as a writer, trainer and software developer. He has worked with a number of web technologies from Perl through to Java over the last ten years. He is currently a senior developer for UK-based Historic Futures Ltd., developing the next generation of socially responsible supply-chain systems using Ajax.
ASP.NET 3.5: Watch ASP.NET Development in Action

Watch how easy it is to build a “to do” task list application from scratch using ASP.NET 2.0, ASP.NET AJAX, SQL Server Express, and Visual Web Developer.

Microsoft’s Joe Stagner starts by creating a fresh database and the code to access its data. We then see how to define a ToDo List page that displays and updates content in the database. Finally we learn how to add AJAX functionality to the page to improve the user experience.

Using AJAX in ASP.NET pages can increase performance and improve the overall user experience of an application. It is not necessary to rewrite existing pages to add AJAX features. With only a few modifications, an existing ASP.NET page can be made to use AJAX. This video demonstrates how to add AJAX functionality to an existing ASP.NET page with minimal effort.

Gears and the Mashup Problem

Google Tech Talks
September, 20 2007

ABSTRACT

Mashups are the most interesting innovation in software development in decades. Unfortunately, the browser's security model did not anticipate this development, so mashups are not safe if there is any confidential information in the page. Since virtually every page has at least some confidential information in it, this is a big problem. Google Gears may lead to the solution.

Speaker: Douglas Crockford
Douglas Crockford is the world's foremost living authority on JavaScript. He is an architect with Yahoo's Ajax Strike Force. He is the founder of two startups, and was Director of Technology at Lucasfilm Ltd., Director of New Media at
Paramount, and a researcher at Atari and SRI.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Technologies, Companies, Development, Techtalks, AJAX, Google, Javascript, Lectures

Google Developer Day Sydney: Mapplets: Making Maps Mashups Discoverable

Mapplets: Making Maps Mashups Discoverable
Presented by James Macgill

Thousands of Google Maps mashups have been created in the two years since we released the Google Maps API, but most of these sites are islands of information and few users know that they exist. We will discuss an approach to make these sites more discoverable by users around the world. More details will be provided at Developer Day.

James Macgill holds a PhD from the University of Leeds in the UK where he worked on innovative spatial analysis techniques. James subsequently worked as deputy director of the Centre for Computational Geography at Leeds on a variety of geospatial research initiatives. Among those was the foundation of the open source GeoTools library, a Java GIS toolkit for developing standards compliant solutions which now powers a number of other open source geospatial projects including GeoServer and uDIG. Before moving to Google in 2005, James was a Senior Researcher at the Penn State GeoVISTA Center, working on research in geovisualization methods and tools.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, AJAX, Web Services, Google, Lectures

This year, DHH noted that he up until now had started all his previous keynotes about Rails celebrating how “freakin’ fantastic we are”. For this keynote, he thought - with Rails being well within in its third year in existence - that it was time to perhaps be happy with what we have.

He explained that new things tend to go through certain phases: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, and then you win - … and then what? “Ruby on Rails went through these phases way too fast”, DHH said, “I was having a lot of fun going through these phases; I’m kind of sad it is over.”

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Ruby, Lectures, Ruby On Rails

RailsConf'07 Keynote: David Heinemeier Hansson

With the release of Rails 1.2 we take a look back at David Heinemeier Hansson’s RailsConf keynote from Chicago.

In it, he outlines a number of issues that the Rails team was looking at as they moved towards the current release, the importance of opinionated software and of course, how he “learned to stop worry and love the CRUD.”

Here, briefly, is an outline of the talk:

Discovering Resources on Rails

Problem with Crud?

Get, Post and Clean URLs

Accounts, Controllers and Crud

CRUD is Not a Goal but and Inspiration

Controllers, Design Patterns and MIME

Doing By Hand Leads to Good Design

Get, Find, Post Redux

Google Developer Day Sydney. Google Gears: Building Better AJAX applications

Google Gears: Building Better AJAX applications
Presented by Aaron Boodman

AJAX applications are at the core of web development, providing both opportunities and challenges. We'll be discussing some of the ways we can address those challenges in this session. More details will be provided at Developer Day.

Aaron Boodman started life as a musician, a mistake he rectified early to the delight of his teachers and dormmates. Suddenly finding himself with more time on his hands, he taught himself to program and began experimenting with and writing about the collection of technologies that became known as "AJAX" many years later. His work from 2000-2001 continues to be referenced and reused today in modern JavaScript toolkits. More recently, he is the creator of Greasemonkey, a popular browser extension that allows people to "mash up" websites using JavaScript. At Google he works on experimental web technology, and occasionally lends a hand on UI for products like Gmail, Reader, and Blogger.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, AJAX, Web Services, Google, Javascript, Lectures

Silverlight: Using Ajax To Dynamically Update Silverlight Content

This video demonstrates a simple notification system build using Silverlight, ASP.NET, AJAX and SQL Server. Silverlight is used at the front end to present a rich UI, which is asynchronously updated using AJAX based on activities of different users in the system. You are stepped through the full solution, from the text input to the back end through the asynchronous delivery service based on JSON-oriented Web services and AJAX proxies.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Technologies, Companies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Silverlight, Microsoft, MSSQL, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

Silverlight: Real-time Data Update With Silverlight And Web Services

This screencast demonstrates how a distributed application can be built with an ASP.NET middleware, and a Web services back end. The middleware consumes the Web service and uses it and a XAML template to generate a Silverlight front end, delivering a stock quote. The front end combines with ASP.NET controls and AJAX in Silverlight’s windowless mode to provide a full UI, allowing the user to specify stock tickers which will then be passed to the ASP.NET middleware. It demonstrates how a full nTier distributed application can be built using ASP.NET, AJAX, Silverlight and Web services
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Web Services, Silverlight, Microsoft, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

The ASP.NET AJAX framework allows your server-side code to hook in and respond to various client-side events. In this video we learn how to implement the After Processing Pattern, which allows server-side code to execute wrap-up logic once the user has finished with the Web page.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Microsoft, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework

The standard ASP.NET validation controls work on both the server and the client. Server-side validation adds to the security of your Web application, while client-side validation adds to the user friendliness of your Web application. This video demonstrates how the ValidatorCallout control from the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit extends the standard validation controls to enhance the user experience by neatly positioning validation messages in callout boxes.

ASP.Net: How Do I: Use the ASP.NET AJAX History Control?

One problem faced by a typical AJAX application is that a partial page update is not added to the history of the Web browser. This means that the browser’s Back button does not move back one AJAX step, but moves back one entire document, which is unlikely to be what the user expects. The ASP.NET AJAX History control allows the developer to insert history points so that the user may click the browser’s Back and Forward buttons to move between AJAX steps.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, AJAX, Microsoft, Javascript, ASP.NET, Screencasts, .NET Framework
