In most of our videos on the ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel, we have used a Button control to cause an UpdatePanel to refresh its content. Yet we may use any event raised by any other ASP.NET server control. This video uses the SelectedIndexChanged event of the DropDownList control as a trigger for refreshing an UpdatePanel control. We see also how we can dynamically change the stylesheet class associated with the controls contained in the UpdatePanel control.

ASP.NET AJAX: How Do I: Implement the Persistent Communications Pattern using Web Services?

In a traditional Web site the browser and the server do not maintain an ongoing communication, but communicate only in response to the user performing an action. In a modern Web site where the page becomes an application container, it can be advantageous for the browser and the server to maintain an ongoing communication so that page updates can occur without the user performing an action. This is known as the Persistent Communications Pattern for AJAX. ASP.NET AJAX provides two main ways for Web developers to implement the Persistent Communications Pattern. In an earlier video we saw how to use the ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel as the basis of the implementation. In this video we learn how to implement the same pattern using a JavaScrpt call to a Web service, which removes the need for an ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel.

ASP.NET AJAX: How Do I: Use the Conditional UpdateMode of the UpdatePanel?

The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel includes an UpdateMode property that may be set to 'Always' or 'Conditional'. The default is Always, in which case the UpdatePanel will always update its content during an asychronous postback. In this video we learn how we can set the UpdateMode to Conditional, in which case the UpdatePanel will only update its content when our server-side code calls its Update method. This allows you to use conditional logic in your C# or Visual Basic code to determine whether the UpdatePanel will update its content during the current asynchronous postback.

ASP.NET AJAX: How Do I: Use JavaScript to Refresh an ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel?

In this video we learn two different ways of using JavaScript logic to refresh the content of an ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel control. The first way is to add a Button-type server control to the UpdatePanel and use JavaScript to trigger an asynchronous postback and 'pretend' that the postback was caused by the server control inside the UpdatePanel. The second way does not require any Button-type server control to be added to the UpdatePanel, but still allows us to use JavaScript logic to refresh the content of the UpdatePanel. (The second technique was suggested by Dave Ward and you can read more on his weblog entry, " Easily refresh an UpdatePanel, using JavaScript ".)

ASP.NET AJAX: How Do I: Choose Between Methods of AJAX Page Updates?

In this video Joe Stagner compares the two primary methods of performing AJAX-style page updates in an ASP.NET application. The first method is to use an UpdatePanel, where no additional code needs to be written on either the client side or the server side. The benefit of using the UpdatePanel is that everything works automatically. The penalty is that at the client it requires a lot of data to be included in the AJAX request and response, and at the server it requires a full page lifecycle to be executed. The second method is to use network callbacks, where additional code needs to be written on both the client side and the server side. The benefit of using network callbacks is that at the client it requires very little data to be included in the AJAX request and response, and at the server it requires only the called service method to be executed. The penality is the time and effort it takes to write the necessary code. Joe concludes the video by discussing what you should consider when choosing between the two primary methods of AJAX-style page updates.
