V8 is Google's high-performance JavaScript engine used in Google Chrome. V8 is optimized for well-designed object-oriented applications that make heavy use of objects, function calls, and property access. This talk will provide an overview of the internals of V8 and dive into the advanced virtual-machine technology used. So, a few weeks back I showed you how you could see your CSS changes in real-time in any browser (http://blog.edgecase.com/2009/4/6/see-your-css-changes-in-real-time-in-any-browser). That was cool and all, but I haven't found myself using it simply because of the convenience factor. The script had to be included in the page, whereas I could just fire up Web Developer Toolbar in an instant.

Today I'm introducing the bookmarklet version of that same script. It no longer requires jQuery, so just drag the link below up to your bookmark toolbar, and you'll have this functionality one click away.

Firebug is one of the reasons that I changed to Firefox (from Camino, a faster, less memory intensive browser). It is so handy for checking under the hood of websites and anyone who does anything with CSSshould know how to use it!

Firebug’s good for HTML and javascript too, but I don’t use it for them as much.

I was trying to find a video tutorial to show people on the Thesis forums how to use Firebug. However, the ones I found were either too old (Firebug has come a long way in the last year or two), or they were a bit long and rambling.

So, I decided to make one myself. It’s 6.5 minutes (the others I found were double that!) and gives an overview of how to use Firebug, including installation. Feel free to ask questions about it in the comments below!

In this talk we explore web development and debugging strategies with Firebug. An overview of new and improved features and how to use them is presented. We wrap-up with a peek at FireUnit, a new Firebug extension by John Resig and Jan Odvarko, and it's role in unittesting Firebug itself.

Rob Campbell studied CS at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS with an emphasis on computer languages and object oriented programming. Rob has worked in various industries including satellite imaging, shipping logistics and government as a contractor and consultant for more than 15 years. He joined Mozilla in 2006 and led the charge to create a unittesting infrastructure and mindset for application development. He has been involved with performance testing initiatives and analysis before joining the Firebug Working Group in mid-2008.
