Recommenders Everywhere: The WikiLens Community-Maintained Recommender System

Google Tech Talks
November, 13 2007

Suppose you have a passion for items of a certain type, and you wish to start a recommender system around those items. You want a system like Amazon or Epinions, but for cookie recipes, local theater, or microbrew beer. How can you set up your recommender system without assembling complicated algorithms, large software infrastructure, a large community of contributors, or even a full catalog of items?

WikiLens is open source software that enables anyone, anywhere to start a community-maintained recommender around any type of item. We introduce five principles for community-maintained recommenders that address the two
key issues: (1) community contribution of items and associated information; and (2) finding items of interest. Since all recommender communities start small, we look at feasibility and utility in the small world, one with few users, few items, few ratings. We describe the features of WikiLens, which are based on our principles, and give lessons learned from two years of experience running
wikilens.org.

Speaker: Dan Frankowski
Dan Frankowski is both computer science researcher and practitioner in software and algorithms development. He got his master's degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota in 1993, then spent a year in Budapest on a Fulbright grant studying mathematics. From 1997 to 2003 he was an algorithms guy at Net Perceptions. From 2003 to 2006 he was a research fellow with the GroupLens research group at the Unviersity of Minnesota, which is most well-known for recommenders, but now studies online community more broadly. He now works as a software engineer for Google Groups.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Broadcasting, Business, Science, Lectures, Computer Science

ITidiots Episode 48: BDD Lite Touch of Vista / Office 2007

This weeks video training screencast: Continuing on the theme of desktop standardisation, we look at customising a version of Office 2007 for inclusion in our standard Vista image.

Customising Microsoft Office is quite straight forward, we take you through the different ways of customising an installation of Office 2003 and Office 2007. Then we use BDD 2007 to build our Vista reference machine, deploy the customised install of Office 2007, then image the resultant machine for delivery to all workstations. Finally we test the deployment of the image using BDD light touch initiated from a WDS server. Once again pretty explosive stuff!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

ITIdiots Episode 47: Introduction To BDD 2007

This weeks video training screencast: There are so many advantages to maintaining a SOE, or Standard Operating Environment. Just think how easy it would be for support your workstations if you knew that they were all from the same build, also users roaming for machine to machine would get the same end user experience which surely has got to minimize support. Microsoft BDD, or Business Desktop Deployment, is a great way to achieve a SOE. In this episode we introduce BDD 2007 and discuss it potential within the ITidiots.com network, then go on to demonstrate a Lite touch deployment of Windows XP SP2.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

This weeks video training screencast: Windows Server 2003 Release 2 contains some great new features that help you manage your file server. Finally a quota system that you can enable on a folder and not an entire drive, it even has email reporting! Then there's file screening which can be used to prevent files of a certain type from being stored on the server. DFS replication replaces FRS which means that DFS replicas now replicate in a controlled and far more efficient manner. The list goes on, but that's all you are gonna see in this episode.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

Open Source Developers @ Google Speaker Series: Lessons From Advogato

Google Tech Talks
June 25, 2007

ABSTRACT

Lessons from Advogato

Advogato is a community blog for free software developers, founded in 1999 as a testbed for ideas on attack-resistant trust metrics. The site now has 13k registered users, of whom over 3000 are ranked with one of the "Apprentice", "Journeyer", or "Master" certifications. Though I neglected the maintenance of the site for many years, it has retained an active community, and is seeing significant new life since it was handed over to the new maintainer, Steven Rainwater.

By the exponential-growth standards of the dot-com boom, Advogato has been only a modest success. Yet, the experience of the site over the years contains a number of lessons. First and foremost, attack-resistant trust metrics do work. The site succeeds in being remarkably spam-free, as well as completely open to the worldwide community of free software developers, and achieves these goals without needing a huge amount of manual input to delete spammers.

Thus, the main lesson is that trust metrics do work, but they need to be applied with care. Experience with the site teaches the importance of choosing and implementing the appropriate trust metric for the assumptions at hand. There is widespread "cert inflation," where many users are ranked higher than the guidelines would recommend. The trust metrics also did not bring a flow of very high quality articles to the front page.

Another important lesson is that openness and transparency work. The workings of the trust metric (including the complete source code) is public. Thus, Advogato strongly refutes the prevailing wisdom that secrecy is needed for spam protection. This lesson is similar to the ineffectiveness of "security through obscurity".

Lastly, I'll spend some time discussing why Advogato failed to catch fire in the public's imagination, despite its qualities. Possible factors include lack of promotion, and fact that the trust metrics were never tested against real money.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

How the FreeBSD Project Works

Google Tech Talks
June 20, 2007

ABSTRACT

The FreeBSD Project is one of the oldest and most successful open source operating system projects, seeing wide deployment across the IT industry. From the root name servers, to top tier ISPs, to core router operating systems, to firewalls, to embedded appliances, you can't use a networked computer for ten minutes without using FreeBSD dozens of times. Part of FreeBSD's reputation for quality and reliability comes from the nature of its development organization--driven by a hundreds of highly skilled volunteers, from high school students to university professors. And unlike most open source projects, the FreeBSD Project has developers who have been working on the same source base for over twenty years. But how does this organization work? Who pays the bandwidth bills, runs the web servers, writes the documentation, writes the code, and calls the shots? And how can developers in a dozen time zones reach agreement on the time of day, let alone a kernel architecture? This presentation will attempt to provide, in 45 minutes, a brief if entertaining snapshot into what makes FreeBSD run.

Speaker: Robert Watson
Robert Watson is a researcher at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory investinging operating system and network security. Prior to joining the Computer Laboratory to work on a PhD, he was a Senior Principal Scientist at McAfee Research, now SPARTA ISSO, a leading security research and development organization, where he directed government and commercial research contracts for customers that include DARPA, the US Navy, and Apple Computer. His research interests include operating system security, network stack structure and performance, and windowing system structure. He is also a member of the FreeBSD Core Team and president of the FreeBSD Foundation.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Business, Techtalks, Google, Lectures
