The Joys and Pains of a Long Lived Codebase

Agile development practices and good Object Oriented Design principles are supposed to enable unending, gentle modification of an existing codebase. Is this really true, though? In the course of 5+ years developing and evolving an open source framework, I've learned a lot of painful lessons about the issues that retard code extensions and modifications. I've also learned a little bit about the design decisions that dramatically increased my ability to extend the code. In this talk I'll show several instances of how failing to heed design fundamentals introduced code viscosity, and how some strategic refactorings opened up the flood gates for new functionality.

Undoubtedly, the practice of Test Driven Development directly supports your ability to modify a system, but I found out the hard way that there are also plenty of ways to do it wrong. I'll share examples of high friction TDD and the changes in strategy I employed to reduce that friction to wring more value out of TDD.

The programming languages we use for .Net development have changed dramatically in 5 years. We can apply the new language features in C# 3.0 to improve the readability and structure of both our code and the way that we express unit test specifications.

Lastly, I'll discuss our changing expectations on framework usability and the resulting impact on design.

Bio
Jeremy is the Chief Software Architect for Dovetail Software in Austin, TX. Jeremy learned agile development practices as a .Net consultant at ThoughtWorks, one of the pioneers of agile development. Jeremy is the author of the open source StructureMap tool for Dependency Injection with .Net and writes the Patterns in Practice column for MSDN Magazine.

About the conference
QCon is a conference that is organized by the community, for the community. The result is a high quality conference experience where a tremendous amount of attention and investment has gone into having the best content on the most important topics presented by the leaders in our community. QCon is designed with the technical depth and enterprise focus of interest to technical team leads, architects, and project managers

He started out showing how you can host the ruby engine in a C# application, in just a couple lines of code he wrote a WPF irb clone. He also showed how with C# 4.0 you can run the ruby engine, send it code, then reach in and get specific variables and pull them back out (using the dynamic keyword).

He went on to show accessing C# from IronRuby and even monkey patching a CLR class from IronRuby, which was pretty cool. Corey Haines asked to confirm and you can even undef methods from a CLR class from IronRuby. (of course they would only be modified from a DLR perspective)

John also shared some interesting statistics, I believe they were that the language rubyspecs were around 93% passing and the lib specs were around 78% complete. He also mentioned that performance right now is mostly better than MRI with some that is worse but that they haven't spent alot of time on it yet. IronRuby and the DLR clock in at only 2MB when compressed, which is fairly impressive.

There was a question about 1.9 which he basically said they weren't even thinking about yet, which is worrisome since it will probably be out fairly soon and I would at least like to hear that they have a plan on how to implement it. (otherwise they will always be behind) (c) James

It also support numerous bridges to other messaging and internet protocols so is highly adaptable to many use cases. The core server is implemented in Erlang which is well known for delivering a highly scalable and stable environment for applications that involve messaging. When JP Morgan Chase introduced AMQP, Erlang seemed an obvious implementation choice. This talk will explain the rationale of this decision in detail and describe the technology and architecture of the server. Today RabbitMQ is used in solutions across multiple platforms and client languages such as Java, C#/.NET, Ruby, Python and Erlang.

Come to this talk if you want to hear about:

Why did we choose Erlang?

How is RabbitMQ implemented?

Who uses RabbitMQ and why?

What will future designs do differently based on experiences in building and maintaining RabbitMQ?

How does the AMQP wire protocol compare to Protocol Buffers and RPC mechanisms in terms of latency, efficiency and scalability?

How does AMQP compare to XMPP?

How does the XMPP over AMQP bridge work and how are we using it for federated, open microblogging?

John talked about joining Microsoft, working on some earlier Ruby bridges and RubyCLR, and overall did a pretty good job as a Microsoft speaker in front of an open source Ruby crowd. He used some good self-depreciating humor and even wore a devil tail. He covered the main goals of the project, one of which is to get rails up and running before RailsConf next year which would be a very impressive accomplishment. He also talked about how IronRuby will serve as a tool for testing the performance of the DLR.

John went through a couple demos with varying success, the IronRuby with Mono on Linux didn't go so well but the demo using Silverlight was pretty cool. (although he had to show the XAML ugliness to a crowd that cares about beauty) Probably the most interesting part was showing some of the actual IronRuby implementation which is basically written in C# using some special attributes. The process looks something like writing your C#, adding attributes like [RubyMethod] and [RubyClass], compile the C#, then run Rake gen.

CardSpace Is Dead. Long Live CardSpace!
It's a shame that InfoCard/CardSpace doesn't get the attention it deserves. It really is an amazingly cool technology that can make life a lot easier for developers. It took me a long time (3 days to be exact) to find some usable, workable code to get CardSpace running (yes I've seen the examples - none of them worked).

Long and short of it is that once I got it up and running, I was amazed!
