Really good stuff here. The discussion ranges from what’s great and not-so-great about Django in a newsroom to the general decline of the newspaper industry to how to get the “pointy-haired bosses” at traditional media organizations to buy into something other than the “pageviews equals dollars” worldview that is helping to destroy serious journalism in favor of photos of Lindsey Lohan. Really good talk.

First Core Meeting

For the first time ever, the Satchmo core development team actually met face-to-face. The panels and discussions at DjangoCon made it completely worth my time and money to attend the convention, but even had they not been so useful, the trip would have been worth it just for the chance to meet and hang out with my fellow core developers.

We decided on our “Road to 0.8 release” strategy. We’re going to clean up the code & docs, closing as many tickets as possible in the next two or three weeks. In the meantime, Jag is going to be testing his shiny new Order Admin screens. When he’s ready, we’ll release!

The 0.8 release will be pinned to Django 1.0, making it much easier for us to tell people what version of Django to use. It is getting quite old to have to repeatedly specify “rev such-and-such” to new users on the Satchmo-Users list.

Initial 1.0 Discussion

Following 0.8, we’re going to work on a six-month release cycle, trying to fairly closely follow the Django Project’s newly announced intention to start doing timed releases.

We came up with quite a list of new or modified functionality we’d like to see in 1.0, but the primary driving force is going to be a very thorough and exciting refactor of the Product Model. Our intention is to make it much easier to allow store owners and developers to create products which exactly fit the specific needs of their store.

Google has posted the keynote in its entirety to Youtube, which you can find embedded above. While the talk is humorous (and takes many jabs at rails developers) it does provide insight into what makes a good web framework. Cal is director of engineering at flickr and is an authority on how to make websites scale. He points out that most frameworks are designed to get projects off the ground quickly, but are lacking when it comes to building an even larger service. He talks about several things in django that need work and improvements that could be made. It’s really an interesting look at what it takes to go big.

Towards the end, Cal notes that django has no mascot, “I could take a framework seriously that had a mascot with magical powers.” well, that seemed to be the easiest thing to fix so avalonstar created django: the web framework for ponies with magical powers. It’s available as wallpaper on djangopony, and ruby legend, _why, has already set about debunking the magic involved.

Django TestMaker

At work lately we've been writing a bunch of tests for all of the work we've been doing. This is generally a good thing (tm). I was getting tired of manually having to write all of the code to test the views inside of my app. So I decide to write a little app that helps me automate the writing of tests.

I wrote a piece of middleware (that should obviously only be used during development!) that shadows the current activity in django into a log file. This log file should then be ready to copy and paste into a doctest for easy testing of your views. This is a little hard to explain, but the code should be pretty self explanitory.

I created a google code project for it so that people can go ahead and hack on it and make it better. It is pretty rudimentary at current, but it gets the job done.

I think a big win from this approach is that your testing data is much more "real", since it's a copy of your session with a real browser. I know writing django tests I sometimes use contrived data because it is a pain to enter it all. This should help improve on that situation.

Here is a video of it in action, this should allow it to make more sense.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Testing, Frameworks, Development

Speaker: Jacob Kaplan-Moss
Jacob Kaplan-Moss is one of the lead developers of Django. At his day job, he's a software architect for Whiskey Media, one of those newfangled Web One-Point-Oh companies you've read so much about. A good deal of Jacob's work time is devoted to working on Django.
Jacob previously worked for the Lawrence Journal-World, a locally-owned newspaper in Lawrence, KS where Django was developed. At the Journal-World Jacob was the lead developer of Ellington, a commercial web publishing platform for media companies.

You will learn how to use the Django web framework with the datastore API provided by Google App Engine, and how to get the most mileage out of the combination.
