UVNTV.com is a LAMP site (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) that is using Windows Media servers to recreate a TV experience on the web using Microsoft Silverlight. They chose to use Silverlight becuase of the higher quality they were getting out of WMV/VC-1 than Flash's On2 codec. The team explains how and why they changed their site to use Silverlight from Flash.

Enhanced Flash-Based Local Portals to the Google Map

Google Tech Talks
February, 20 2008

ABSTRACT

Cheryl Parker, founder of Urban Explorer, will present their patent-pending Flash-based "Local Portals" for the Google Mapping API. Urban Explorer's "Local Portal" enhances the Google Map with both advanced GIS functionality and dynamically-served polygonal-based map layers. Flash-based map layers are dynamically served via an underlying MySQL database that features time series business, real estate and demographic data sets. These data sets, in turn, populate translucent vector-based parcel, census and city-based map layers that align perfectly with the underlying Google Map. The Local Portals enable users to search, view and analyze aggregate datasets across time and space, by featuring thematic animated mapping and multi-criteria searches across multiple datasets. The portals will be distributed as web widgets through the OpenSocial platform, via LinkedIn and SalesForce.com. They will be distributed freely, but a minimal fee will be charged for data downloads, using Google Checkout. Portals will be developed for a number of vertical markets, including Small Businesses, Real Estate Developers, Political Mapping, and so on.

Speaker: Cheryl Parker
Cheryl Parker is founder of Urban Explorer (www.theurbanexplorer.com), based in San Francisco, Ca. Prior to establishing Urban Explorer in 1999, Ms. Parker worked professionally as an urban designer, economic development specialist, city planner and GIS web developer. Ms. Parker was also a Lecturer in the Landscape Architecture Department at University of California at Berkeley for six years, teaching GIS-based 3-D simulation for Urban Designers. Ms. Parker received a Masters of Architecture and Masters of City Planning from UC/Berkeley in 1994.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Design, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Away with Applications: The Death of the Desktop

Google Tech Talks
May 4, 2007

ABSTRACT

The computer desktop metaphor is ubiquitous, but how much work do we get done there? None! Time is entirely wasted navigating or shuffling content to the application in which we can finally work. What lessons can we learn from designing interfaces without the desktop and without applications? Is it even possible? And how does this apply to the Web? Currently, Web applications are often more usable than their desktop-based counterparts because each one does one thing and does it well. Desktop applications used to be the same way, but over time -- as applications grew to support the the users in the long tail -- each became a complex portmanteau of all possible features. If we are not careful, our Web apps will suffer the same conglomerated fate. Mashups and services help to solve the problem on the development end by freeing functionality from any particular application. But, there is currently no way to offer that wealth of possible functionality to users in a scalable way. Would it be nice to embed a dynamic map into your Gmail message? Sure. A Flickr slideshow? Sure. But for Google to offer those in addition to the hundreds of other possible options, would clutter the interface beyond usability. What's needed is a universal method of accessing functionality: a way of harnessing the power of services without the need for application developers to explicitly support them. I'll be demonstrating such a method.

The talk demonstrates that a ZUI plus a universal method of accessing functionality spells the death of the application-centric computing model and the desktop-design paradigms.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Broadcasting, Design, Techtalks, AJAX, RSS, Flash, Google, Lectures

Leveraging HTML/JavaScript and Ajax in Apollo Applications

Chris Brichford gave a talk at Adobe MAX on Leveraging HTML and JavaScript within Apollo.

Here are some notes from the talk:

Overview of Apollo

Apollo is a cross-platform runtime that allows you to take your web skills to build desktop applications.

Your applications can be all Flash, all HTML, or a mixture of both.

The first demo showed an HTML Control Tester mixing an HTML window with Flash content behind. On the fly the application had controls to blur, rotate, change transparency, and it all still worked (e.g. links and such). Check out the video here to see using Google upside down :)

Motivation for supporting HTML

Realize that we need to be able to reuse the web application content for rich desktop applications, and want to leverage the knowledge of Ajax and CSS.

The use cases are:

Embedding a full browser: integrate live partner content, or building a dashboard

HTML UI: Text field on steroids, create UI widgets using HTML markup

HTML Support

HTML engine renders to Flash display list object, and can be treated as any other display list (e.g. filters, fransforms, opacitiy).

Considering using Flash fonts to render HTML text.

HTML form widgets will be visually consistent with your application so the user can’t tell what is Flash and what is HTML.

On the scripting side JavaScript and ActionScript object models are bidirectional and seamless.

HTML can be loaded from the network, URLRequest, ActionScript string, or an adobe-app:/ package.

HTML Engine Choice

Using WebCore and JavaScriptCore from the WebKit open source project.

They chose it because:

WebKit is mobile friendly.

WebKit is a small source code base for a modern HTML engine

Planning to keep Apollo in sync with Safari’s HTML and JavaScript support. So, if you support Safari, your Ajax app would work as-is inside Apollo.

Apollo will support Adobe Reader and Flash plugins.

API overview

Still in the works.

New ActionScript class called HTMLControl which is a subclass of Sprite and the default behaviour is modeled on an iframe.

You can subclass the HTMLControl yourself and change behaviour (e.g. what happens when a link is clicked, when window.open is called, when a form is submitted, etc).

A nice demo was Maptacular that was a mashup of Google Maps with application behaviour.

Key Takeaways

Unified HTML and Flash rendering pipelines.

Bridging JavaScript and ActionScript object model.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Development, AJAX, Flash, Javascript, Actionscript
