HyperDB and High Performance WordPress

What do you do when your blog goes from a thousand pageviews a day to a million?

Barry and Matt have worked with some of the most popular blogs in the world, and they know what it takes to make them hum. In the first part Matt will talk about HyperDB, the database class that is the magic behind WordPress.com, and how you can use it for your own sites. In the second part Barry will look at some real-world performance benchmarks of WP and some best practices on the systems level.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, PHP, Lectures

Steve Souders is Yahoo's chief guru in the art and science of web performance and the author of the YSlow plugin for Firebug; he is the author of High Performance Web Sites, a forthcoming title from O'Reilly (bonus points if you can guess which animal O'Reilly's editors chose for the cover of this one...). For the past three years, Steve has led a team investigating the root causes of poor page performance and applying the lessons learned to Yahoo!'s high-traffic, media-rich properties.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Yahoo!, Javascript, Lectures, CSS

Bay Area MySQL Users Group Meeting, July 2007 - Tim Kay

Tim presents the architecture that he designed for one of his clients. The system collects data from thousands of cell phones and matches the data acoustically with reference data that is collected via a different process.

The requirements include data integrity but not high availability, so he was able to compromise in a way that significantly reduced cost and complexity.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Databases, Broadcasting, Google, MySQL, Lectures

Seattle Conference on Scalability: Lessons In Building Scalable Systems

Google Tech Talks
June 23, 2007

ABSTRACT

2007 Google Seattle Conference on Scalability:
Lessons In Building Scalable Systems Speaker: Reza Behforooz

Since launching Google Talk in the summer of 2005, we have integrated the service with two large existing products: Gmail and orkut. Each of these integrations provided unique scalability challenges as we had to handle a sudden big increase in the number of users. Today, Google Talk supports millions of users and handles billions of packets per day. I will discuss several practical lessons and key insights from our experience that can be used for any project. These lessons will cover both engineering and operational areas.

Reza Behforooz is a Staff Engineer at Google and is currently the technical lead for the Google Talk servers. He's passionate about building large systems and working on communication products in an attempt to make the world a smaller place. While at Google, he has primarily worked on Google Talk, Gmail, orkut, Google Groups, and shared infrastructure used by several Google applications. Reza holds a BS from Cornell and a MS from Stanford in Computer Science. Prior to Google, he held various engineering and management positions at Microsoft and two startups, Zaplet and Epiphany.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Graphics Processors, Graphics APIs, and Computation on GPUs

Google Tech Talks
December 5, 2006

ABSTRACT

Graphics processing units (GPUs), designed to produce images ranging from scenes in computer games to CAT scan results, have become computational powerhouses capable of hundreds of gigaflops per second. As computational power has increased, so has flexibility and programmability, allowing GPUs to be applied in new ways in both graphics and non-graphics applications.

I will review the architecture of recent GPUs and the traditional software interfaces to them, as well as present a new interface from ATI that more closely reflects current GPU design and use.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Using ROSE to Mitigate Performance Trade-offs

 Google TechTalks
April 03, 2006

Daniel Quinlan

ROSE is a tool for building source-to-source transformation tools for the optimization of C and C++ object-oriented applications. ROSE represents a mechanism to build translators that read the user's application source code and output highly optimized customized C++ code.

ROSE is the compiler-framework which permits library or application developers to build their own domain-specific source-to-source analyzers/translators. The specification of transformations is made as easy as possible with non-compiler people as a target audience. Custom analysis of large scale C++ applications is also simple to specify; ROSE supports a number of standard program analysis phases common to typical compilers, and is particularly focused on being easy to use. ROSE is an Open Source project, supporting large scale DOE applications and includes substantial documentation.

This talk will present ROSE, some of the uses of ROSE, and opportunities for research collaborations. We will present the ongoing work on program visualization and discuss ROSE mechanisms well suited to supporting security analysis of large scale applications.

LinuxConf.Au: Linux Clusters

Clusters are defined as a set of computers working as one to execute tasks. The applications for it has no limit: from balance requests for web services to systems for explore petroleum, the amount of saves can be from thousands to gazillions of dollars. More then that, it is an extensive and interesting area. The Open Source community has been know as a big player in Clusters, with several of the biggest clusters in the world running Linux. And the tools available for it improve quickly. Distributed file systems, fault tolerance software, data replication, monitoring and service takeover are some of softwares developed to create those environments.

In this presentation I want to explain about how to provide this services in differents enviroments and which softwares choose for each kind of situation. We will go through the basics of Clusters, HA, LB and how to identify the pieces involved in a complete solution. Then we will show the available softwares, the advantages and not so good issues of each one, and help the administrator to create a complete environment. This presentation will show several implementations of Clusters - high availability, high processing computing and load balance - and the technologies for each one. We are going to talk about DRBD, Heartbeat, Ultramonkey, Linux Virtual Server, Global FileSystem and more.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Broadcasting, Networking, Linux, LinuxConf.AU, Lectures, TCP/IP

LinuxConf.Au: Making NFS Suck Faster

Linux makes a great little NFS server, the emphasis being on "little". SGI's experience is that Linux' NFS server will scale to small machines with 4 or fewer processors, but not to larger machines. To make Linux scale to 8 processors and 8 Gigabit Ethernet network cards, an important market segment for SGI, we have had to perform a lot of performance and scaling work.

After protracted internal development, this work is now (July 2006) just starting to be pushed into the Linux mainstream, as a series of over 40 kernel and nfs-utils patches. See the Linux NFS mailing list at nfs.sourceforge.net.

The talk will start with a brief introduction to the theory of operation of the Linux NFS server, explaining how the nfsd threads work and a brief sketch of the lifetime of an NFS call as seen by the server.

Tools and techniques for identifying and measuring software bottlenecks on large machines will be explored. These include profilers, statistics tools, network sniffers, and the relative merits of various kinds of load generators.

Various specific bottlenecks in the NFS server (discovered using these tools) will be covered, along with how they affect performance on real workloads and the approach SGI have taken in fixing each. Some of the bottlenecks are specific to the NUMA nature of SGI's architecture, but most are generic to any multi-processor platform.

The problems associated with erving large numbers (thousands) of clients, rather than large amount of traffic from mere tens of clients, will be discussed, together with how SGI have solved those.

Finally, there will be a brief mention of work remaining for the future.

Some knowledge of Linux kernel internals and TCP/IP networking will be assumed, but not of NFS.
