In up and coming tutorials I will show how to clean up an autotrace image so you have clean crisp lines and some of the other ways to take your beautiful art out of your sketch pads and onto your screens.

In a two part episode, Bert shows us how to create an enchanted dagger and cover. This week, Bert begins by making the enchanted dagger's majestic handle.

Bert creates the shape of the dagger by using the pen tool as a mask. Bert adds texture to the main body of the handle (to create a pearl effect) by using various filters, such as Filter-Render-Fibers (adjusting variance and strength), Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blue, Filter-Blur-Motion Blur, inner shadow layer style and dodge tool for a lightened edge.

To create the golden tip of the handle, Bert creates a new layer and makes the shape using the elliptical tool, filling it with a golden color. To add various tones to the tip, Bert uses the dodge and burn tool.

For the side handles, Bert creates the shape using the pen tool as a mask, filling it with a golden color and implementing various effects. Bert duplicates the layer to add dimension and uses the Satin layer style, dodge and burn tool and filter-blur-gaussian blur (to remove the hard edge of the top layer)

To make a gem for the dagger, Bert creates a small red circle, adds noise (filter-noise) and adds a crystal effect (filter-pixilate-cystalize) and drop shadow layer style.

FInally, Bert adds a symbol for the handle using an image previously made in Illustrator and adjusting the opacity, and adding a bevel/emboss and inner shadow layer style.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Design, Screencasts, Photoshop

Bert shows us how to create a 3-D rocket this week with the help of Illustrator and Photoshop. First, Bert uses Illustrator to create the 3-D shape, using the pen tool, Effects>3D>Revolve and adjusting the perspective of the image. With Photoshop, Bert adds a sky background by adding blue tones and using the radial gradient. Then, Bert creates fire for the rocket in a new layer with the spatter brush, adjusting the spacing, size and angle jitter, and adding color dynamics. Bert then gives the rocket a little warp to make it more realistic.

To create a trail of smoke following the rocket, Bert creates a new image. First, he fills a layer with a neutral color, used the render>fiber filter and adjusts the variance and strengths. Bert adjusts the perspective , adds a gaussian blur and brush stroke>spatter to give it a soft and smoky feel.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Design, Screencasts, Photoshop

Bert distorts a recent aerial photograph of San Jose, CA by creating new buildings from scratch. First, Bert uses Illustrator to form the building by creating guidelines to match the horizon line of the image. Bert then imports his creation into Photoshop in order to add realistic features: Bert adds reflection, changes the opacity, uses the film grain filter to match the original photograph, and implements the blur and noise filter to make the building more lifelike.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Design, Screencasts, Photoshop

Curled ribbons for campaign posters are just the beginning!

"Lot of viewers have requested a lot of things in Illustator" says Bert Monroy so he's gonna give you some tools and concepts to play with in this essential art tool.

In this episode, Bert walks you thru some basic 3D concepts in Illustrator: making an invisible 3 dimensional effect using the 3D Extrude and Bevel tool, then using the Map Art tool to wrap a Symbol he's created around the 3D shape.

What's he creating? Custom graphics, in this case, star covered curled ribbons, using some basic drawings.

"It's what we map onto that invisible 3 dimensional shape that becomes the final illustration" says Bert. (By clicking the Invisible Geometry button in Map Art, the 3D shape disappears, and you have the mapped graphics all by themselves.)

This is just the beginning: Remember: the best way to learn is to sit there and play!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Design, Screencasts
