David Heinemeier Hansson Keynote at RailsConf 2007

This year, DHH noted that he up until now had started all his previous keynotes about Rails celebrating how “freakin’ fantastic we are”. For this keynote, he thought - with Rails being well within in its third year in existence - that it was time to perhaps be happy with what we have.

He explained that new things tend to go through certain phases: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, and then you win - … and then what? “Ruby on Rails went through these phases way too fast”, DHH said, “I was having a lot of fun going through these phases; I’m kind of sad it is over.”

Chad Fowler has been a software developer and manager for some of the world's largest corporations. He recently lived and worked in India, setting up and leading an offshore software development center. He is co-founder of Ruby Central, Inc., a non-profit corporation responsible for the annual International Ruby Conference and The International Rails Conference, and is a leading contributor in the Ruby community.

Chad is a contributor and editor for numerous books and is author of My Job Went to India (and all I got was this lousy book): 52 Ways to Save Your Job and Rails Recipes.

A warm greeting to those who attended RailsConf 2006, and an equally warm greeting to those who couldn’t. Dave Thomas opened the conference by challenging the Rails community to attack and solve various issues in the following keynote.

Dave Thomas is recognized internationally as an expert who develops high-quality software—accurate and highly flexible systems. He helped write the now-famous Agile Manifesto, and regularly speak on new ways of producing software. He is the author of six books, including the best selling The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master (Addison-Wesley) and Programming Ruby: A Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide (Pragmatic Bookshelf).

Bruce Tate is a father, kayaker, author and independent consultant in Austin, Tx. He worked for 13 years at IBM, in roles ranging from a database systems programmer to Java consultant. He left IBM to work for several startups in roles ranging from director to CTO. He now works with charity focused startup Changing the Present. He is the author of six books, including the best selling Bitter series, the Jolt-winning Better, Faster, Lighter Java, and the Spring Developer's Notebook.
