Dryad: A general-purpose distributed execution platform

Google Tech Talks
November, 1 2007

ABSTRACT

Web search has generated the need and economic support for a new class of data-intensive supercomputing applications. Several computing platforms have been created to support this need: the first described in the literature is Google's MapReduce. I will describe the architecture of the Dryad system developed at Microsoft Research, and explain some of our design choices. Dryad allows more general computations than MapReduce, and has consequently been used as a middleware abstraction on which higher-level programming models can be implemented. I will also briefly discuss some of these.

Speaker: Michael Isard
Michael Isard started out as a computer vision researcher, but has gradually been lured into systems research by his colleagues, first at DEC/Compaq SRC and now at Microsoft Research Silicon Valley. He was closely involved in the design and implementation of the first version of Microsoft's in-house search engine, and his systems research subsequently has concentrated on programming models for parallel and distributed computing.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Science, Techtalks, Microsoft, Google, Lectures, Computer Science

ITidiots Episode 48: BDD Lite Touch of Vista / Office 2007

This weeks video training screencast: Continuing on the theme of desktop standardisation, we look at customising a version of Office 2007 for inclusion in our standard Vista image.

Customising Microsoft Office is quite straight forward, we take you through the different ways of customising an installation of Office 2003 and Office 2007. Then we use BDD 2007 to build our Vista reference machine, deploy the customised install of Office 2007, then image the resultant machine for delivery to all workstations. Finally we test the deployment of the image using BDD light touch initiated from a WDS server. Once again pretty explosive stuff!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

This weeks video training screencast: In this episode we cover Exchange Server 2007, and talk about the new architecture and features. After installing Exchange into the ITidiots.com domain we take a look at the new management console and Outlook Web Access, the much improved web access portal. Then we randomly configure some of the new features and show you the outcome. Once again, unmissable!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

ITIdiots Episode 47: Introduction To BDD 2007

This weeks video training screencast: There are so many advantages to maintaining a SOE, or Standard Operating Environment. Just think how easy it would be for support your workstations if you knew that they were all from the same build, also users roaming for machine to machine would get the same end user experience which surely has got to minimize support. Microsoft BDD, or Business Desktop Deployment, is a great way to achieve a SOE. In this episode we introduce BDD 2007 and discuss it potential within the ITidiots.com network, then go on to demonstrate a Lite touch deployment of Windows XP SP2.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

This weeks video training screencast: Windows Server 2003 Release 2 contains some great new features that help you manage your file server. Finally a quota system that you can enable on a folder and not an entire drive, it even has email reporting! Then there's file screening which can be used to prevent files of a certain type from being stored on the server. DFS replication replaces FRS which means that DFS replicas now replicate in a controlled and far more efficient manner. The list goes on, but that's all you are gonna see in this episode.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Companies, Broadcasting, Business, Windows, Microsoft, Podcasts, Screencasts

MWRC: John Lam - RubyCLR and Ruby.NET

As dynamic languages gain popularity, it becomes more important to play well with others. There are a tremendous number of useful libraries that ship with the .NET platform that Ruby developers can use in their applications. RubyCLR is a bridge between the standard C-based implementation of the Ruby interpreter, and code that executes in the .NET Common Language Runtime. We will look at the design of RubyCLR to better understand how to implement a high-performance and high-fidelity interop layer between dynamic languages and statically typed libraries.

John Lam is a Program Manager on the Common Language Runtime team at Microsoft. He's the creator of RubyCLR, a high-performance bridge between Ruby and the .NET Common Language Runtime. He's bringing the love of Ruby out to the statically typed heathens at Microsoft and beyond.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Frameworks, Microsoft, Ruby, Lectures, .NET Framework

OSCON 2007 - Simon Peyton-Jones - A Taste of Haskell Part II

Haskell is the world's leading purely functional programming language that offers a radical and elegant attack on the whole business of writing programs. In the last two or three years there has been an explosion of interest in Haskell, and it is now being used for a bewildering variety of applications.

In this tutorial, I will try to show you why programming in Haskell is such fun, and how it makes you think about programming in a new way.

I'm going to use xmonad as my running example; it's an X11 window manager written entirely in 500 lines of Haskell. Based on xmonad I will show you how to

write functional programs

test them using QuickCheck

write imperative programs

call foreign functions

use Haskell for scripting applications
