First, he looks at the general concerns of science (e.g. long term, ideal, formality) and engineering (e.g. short-term, adequacy, and dependability) before delving on the interdependencies of the two viewpoints. He concludes with a vision of what software will be like: "Someday ...".

Bio
Sir Charles Antony Richard Hoare is a British computer scientist, probably best known for the development of Quicksort, one of the world's most widely used sorting algorithms. He also developed Hoare logic for verifying program correctness, and the formal language, CSP, used to specify the interactions of concurrent processes (inspiration for the Occam programming language).

About the conference
QCon is a conference that is organized by the community, for the community. The result is a high quality conference experience where a tremendous amount of attention and investment has gone into having the best content on the most important topics presented by the leaders in our community. QCon is designed with the technical depth and enterprise focus of interest to technical team leads, architects, and project managers.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Graphics, Science, Development

In this presentation filmed during OOPSLA 2008, Janos Sztipanovits attempts to tackle the complexity of large scale systems integration. Software, systems and control engineering converge in such systems, raising the integration challenges and demanding a new approach to model-based design.

Bio
Dr. Janos Sztipanovits is currently the E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering and professor of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Computer Engineering at Vanderbilt University. He is founding director of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) at Vanderbilt University.

About the conference
Starting in 1986, OOPSLA Conference has proven to be the cradle of many techniques and methodologies that have become mainstream over the years: OOP, Patterns, AOP, XP, Unit Testing, UML, Wiki, and Refactoring. Gaining its prestige with 3 academic tracks, OOPSLA Conference has managed to attract researchers, educators and developers every year. The event is sponsored by ACM.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Graphics
