LinuxConf.Au: What do you mean, marketing? Promoting open source projects

I've been writing about Linux and open source professionally for more than seven years. I'm currently the editorial director for Linux.com, and I've also written for Linux Magazine, UnixReview.com, Linux Weekly News, ZDNet, and a number of other publications. During this time, I've had an opportunity to see how projects succeed -- and good PR and marketing for a project is crucial to its success, so I'd like to have the opportunity to discuss the best ways for projects to promote themselves and ensure success.

To that end, I'll start by briefly emphasizing the importance of PR and marketing -- which also coincide nicely with community building -- and point to some projects that have done well in this area, such as GNOME, PostgreSQL, KDE, Mozilla, and others.

I will then discuss ways that projects can promote themselves, both to users and developers, including:

Improving the project's homepage.

Finding volunteers to handle PR and marketing efforts.

Improving documentation.

Community code of conduct.

Announcing releases and providing useful reviewer information.

I will also provide some templates for release announcements and discuss the best ways to ensure that projects receive press coverage.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Development, Broadcasting, Business, Linux, LinuxConf.AU, Lectures

LinuxConf.Au: Mozilla Extension Writing Tutorial

We propose a two part tutorial, the first covering the basics of writing an extension for Mozilla-based applications, and the second walking through a non-trivial extension which interacts with network services.

Extensions are a powerful way to extend and enhance Mozilla-based applications such as Firefox, Flock (which Ian and I work on), Epiphany, Songbird, etc. The technology behind them is also useful for developing standalone applications with rich web and network access, via the XULRunner platform.

The first, basic tutorial will cover:

XPCOM: The Mozilla component object model

XUL: The UI language

The way Javascript fits into this

Bundling and distributing and extension

Things to watch out for to prevent exploits

The more advanced tutorial will cover:

Interacting with a web service

Data storage

More complex UI usage

How to target multiple Mozilla-based applications

Security implications of dealing with web services

Both tutorials will guide the attendees through building a working extension. The advanced tutorial will involve some Flock specific features, but the extension will still work in Firefox, and only enable some things if it is run under Flock.

More information on what Flock is all about is available at http://www.flock.com/

Introduction to CSS editing using Firebug

The Firebug Firefox extension allows you to edit in real time your CSS code. Instead of having to make a change, reload, make a change, reload you can just edit it live to see the results. This small video demonstrates how to use Firebug to work with CSS.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Technologies, Development, Broadcasting, Design, AJAX, Javascript, Debugging, Screencasts, CSS

Firebug 1.0 Beta Screencast

Just a few days ago Firebug 1.0 Beta was released, with loads and loads of new features. Roger Johansson calls it the web developer tool of the year:

With the recent release of Firebug 1.0 (beta – the old kind of beta, not a Web 2.0 eternal beta), this extension went from “great” to absolutely marvelous. A must have that no Web developer should do without. I’m serious – you need Firebug.

And, at last, couple days ago Firebug 1.0 Beta Screencast was released by Jesse Newland.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Development, Broadcasting, AJAX, Web Services, Javascript, Debugging, Screencasts
