ABSTRACT

Arnheim (1986) once speculated that different aesthetic domains (e.g., color and music) might be related to each other through common emotional associations. We investigated this hypothesis by having participants pick from among an array of 37 colors the five colors that went best (and later the five that went worst) with each of a set of 18 brief samples of classical orchestral music that varied in composer (Bach/Mozart/Brahms), tempo (slow/medium/fast), and mode (major/minor). They also rated each musical selection and each color for its emotional associations (happy-sad, lively-dreary, strong-weak, angry-calm). Systematic mappings were found between the dimensions of color and music: faster music and major mode were associated with lighter, more saturated, yellower colors, whereas slower music and minor mode were associated with darker, desaturated, bluer colors. More precisely controlled musical stimuli (single-line melodies by Mozart on a synthesized piano) produced more refined relations between the music and the colors chosen to go with them. These color-music mappings are mediated by common emotional associations, because the correlation between emotional ratings of the musical selections and emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them were extremely high (.90 to .98) for all emotional dimensions studied (e.g., people picked happy colors to go with happy music and dreary colors to go with dreary music). The mediating role of emotion was established by obtaining analogous effects when people picked the colors that went best (and worst) with faces and body poses that expressed emotions (happy-sad and angry-calm). Similarly high correlations were obtained when the emotional ratings of the faces/gestures were compared with corresponding emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them. Further findings identify a stable aesthetic difference between people in terms of their level of "preference for harmony" across the domains of color combinations, musical compositions, shape preferences, and spatial composition within a rectangular frame.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Companies, Conferences

If you're interested but haven't been paying attention, or have just been sitting on the sidelines, we're here to show you how you too can be a computer DJ.

First, we'll set the scene with some information about the technologies involved. We'll get you pushing notes with Ben's MIDIator library, and get you set up with a software synthesis environment so that you can play along at home. Best of all, we'll do it all on the cheap.

Then we'll get into the actual music, demonstrating how to represent actual, legitimate music in code using a project Jeremy Voorhis has been working on, and how to manipulate it and play it back. We'll make some beats with Giles Bowkett's Archaeopteryx, and take a brief tour of how it works under the hood.

If you're not into making your own music (be it beats, tones, or just "damn noise"), you're going to need to work with music that someone else has made. Being a good DJ and reacting to the crowd is no walk in the park, and while making a good playlist is easier, it's still no cakewalk. With the right tricks up your sleeve, you can let your computer build a playlist that's unique but still sticks to your personal style. We'll show you what Yossef has tried and learned.

About Ben Bleything, Yossef Mendelssohn
Ben Bleything is a Rubyist, hardware hacker, and musical dilettante from Portland, Oregon. Sometimes he does other things. He has not yet found a quote that adequately sums up his personality.

There's a famous reddit comment that says "Learning how to program might get you paid, but learning how to dance will get you laid." Well, Yossef Mendelssohn can do both. He also aspires to be a better dance DJ and use his laziness and programming know-how to help.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development

SpinRite! We received a few dozen responses to answers we gave on last week's question about burning in hard drives... pretty much all of 'em said Hey! Why didn't you recommend SpinRite???

Freebie Download Pick: TeraCopy. Greg sent this idea in and said, "TeraCopy is a great program that speeds up the copying of files on Windows. Perfect for moving music to an external drive!"

You asked, we review the Netflix Roku. Should you repair the iPhone yourself? HDMI video cards. AAC vs. MP3: which sounds better... and what are best sounding audio encoding tools?

Don't worry... Veronica's not leaving Tekzilla. She can just finally talk about her job, "shooting for the new show, Qore. It's fun, I get to talk to a lot of game developers and artists in the PS3 world. But enough self promotion! I've got more info on my blog, so go check it out!" Now!

Jorge wants to archive his video tapes... Veronica explains the advantages to doing this yourself vs. sending your tapes to a service, and different ways to do the job at home, such as capturing 'em over a camcorder, using a dedicated USB kit like Pinnacle's Dazzle, or our producer Roger's favorite, a set top box like Lite-On LVC-9006

Roku's Netflix Player promises an easy way to watch instant streaming movies from Netflix on your TV instead of your computer. You asked for a review. Patrick's got the hands on scoop.

Freebie Download Pick o' the Week: FreeSnap , "the app that lets you quickly move and resize windows." Quit snickering: this is a nifty way to manage your windows without a mouse!

Should you repair the cracked screen on an iPod yourself? Great question, James, and thanks for sending it on video. We show off the inside of an iPhone on the show, then take a look at the iFixit guide for the display assembly. It's a tough fix, and replacement screens cost at least $165. And, as Veronica points out, with a new iPod around the corner, you might want to wait for Apple fanboys to start selling their old -working- iPhones off cheap!

AAC vs. MP3: Nik has music, a Zune, an iPhone and would rather not render everything twice... so which sounds better, AAC or MP3?

Meanwhile, Kent wants to know which "program produces the truest sounding MP3 or AAC?" We'd go with Exact Audio copy or dBpoweramp on the PC, or Max on OS X. (And let us know if you hear a difference between their encoding and, say, the work done by Windows Media Player or iTunes!)

This week's Web Site We Can't Get Enough Of: Apple TV Junkie... it's more than a complete list of HD Movies on the AppleTV, but that's a great place to start!

Video cards with HDMI output? There are a few of 'em, Garry, but cards with DVI ports and an HDMI adapter in the box are a lot more common. (And they work just as well.) Shop carefully, especially if you want 5.1 audio passthru to your surround sound receiver or HDTV. And make sure the chipset supports HDCP if you want to watch Blu-ray movies!

Want to be part of a world record? Claudio emailed to remind us that Firefox is on a mission to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours... learn more at SpreadFirefox.com

While we're talking Firefox, Patrick is loving the next version of Firefox: Firefox 3 RC1 on Vista and OS X.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Mobile, Podcasts

Wondercon!

1UP.com's reviews editor Garnett Lee joins us as cohost today...

... and he's got the scoop from the Game Developers Conference '08 (The PC Gaming Alliance was big news, sort of... and where is Sony's Home for the Playstation??? )

Antennas Direct's hid its newest HDTV antenna inside a picture frame... Jim Louderback put the PF7 Picture Frame Antenna thru the paces and found it does a great job sucking down analog HDTV. It's cheap, too!

We love the comic books, so our producers Roger and Serafina took a trip to Wondercon, and came back with quite the collection of video.

Can't rip that DVD? You need some stronger tools.... AnyDVD is the bomb at gettting around copy protection on Windows.

On OS X, the folks at Handbrake have a step by step guide for dealing with disks that won't rip: you'll need Fairmount, DVD2OneX and this page!

Yahya wants a recco on a portable music player... that delivers excellent sound quality, and maybe that isn't an iPod. First off, make sure you've got quality audio files to listen to... and a decent set of headphones. (Garnett's convinced the player is the least of your worries.)

Patrick's spent a bunch of time with the Zune and it's quite good. We've also heard good things about Creative's Zen V Plus, the oh so stylish iRiver Clix Gen 2 is a great (if pricey) follow up to the most excellent iriver Clix. If you're looking for video playback, too, the editors at Cnet are big on the Archos 605.

Several folks want to buy Patrick's old Xbox 360 HD DVD drive.... can anybody beat $7.37?

Why does an HDTV cost more than the same sized LCD monitor? Good question, Christopher.

Free file o' the week:

Quick Media Converter lets you drag and drop video into 13 different formats, including PSP, iPod and web friendly formats!

Turning a vertical PC case on its side and running it that way hurt it? We wouldn't worry, Benedict. Patrick's run most of his PCs in horizontal mode with no ill effects. Just don't cover the vents. (They do take up more desktop space, that way, tho!)

Dave, Michael and "B" wrote in with ideas to help Jesse get his Xbox 360 connected to the his dorm's ResNet... and Eric sent a warning that spoofing a MAC address can get you kicked out of school. (It got him tossed!)

What's a good program to format you computer Naevek? Whatever comes with the OS, Windows or OS X will work fine for partitioning a drive.

If you want to do a 'non destructive' partition, ie, you want to change a partition without wiping all the data from inside it, Paragon's Parition Manager is the gold standard, tho GParted, the Gnome Partition Editor is an excellent Open Source alternative. (FYI, here's a great guide to modifying partitions with GParted)

No matter what tool you use, we recco backing up your data before you resize a partition... just in case.

Now, Naevek, if you're looking to format and wipe a drive before you, say, sell the computer it's inside of, our favorite tool is Darik's Boot and Nuke... it should be more than enough to protect your identity... tho Wikipedia says that as of November 2007, "overwriting is no longer a DoD-acceptable sanitization method for magnetic media".

Converting FLAC files to MP3 files? No problem, John. We use dBpoweramp, tho you will have to pay for MP3 support... ya know, since you're using a Zune, you might want to go with WMA instead of MP3... you should be able to do that for free in dBpoweramp.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Networking, Operating Systems, Podcasts

Tekzilla #8: DIY Media Server, Cheap Notebooks, Songza and Songbird

The simplest DIY media server. Ex Machina. Using the Xbox 360 HD DVD with your PC. Find Music: Songza and Songbird. Cheap Notebooks, Buying Online, is WiFi 802.11n done yet?

Sharing media throughout your house isn't too hard if you have a home network... even if, like Walt, you have "3 Macs, 2 iPhones, and numerous iPods." The trick is putting all the audio/video/photos you want to share on one machine you can always leave on, then turning on file sharing. And mapping your various machines at home to it. Call it the simplest home media server possible...

Looking for music on the web? We've got nifty tools for you to check out!

Songbird is billed as a "Desktop media player mashed up with the web." We think of it more as a media browser. Built on the Mozilla application framework (the code underneath Firefox!), Songbird skims web pages for downloadable audio files when you load them, can play your local audio, and thru plugins, even manage your iPod. (And this just scratches the surface.)

Songza is pure music search. And playback. And one click posting to your website. You can even build playlists. We just can't figure out just exactly where it searches... tho we suspect it plays the audio tracks from files found in Google Video searches... you can't download the songs you find to your desktop, but there's a lot of stuff being played from YouTube thru Songza!

"Any ideas when or if Draft n will become standard?" Sure, Scott. The 802.11n spec has one last IEEE vote in early 2008, then should be finalized and on the shelves around September 2008. The years of staring at Pre-N and Draft-N on boxes is almost over... Wi-Fi Alliance certification has already begun.

Certification would be nice, since we've bought Draft n products off the shelves recently that wouldn't work together.

Do you need 802.11n? It's not going to make your Internet connection faster (not unless your existing Wi-Fi network is saturated with too many clients... rather unusual for a home setup) but, in theory, it should give you four times the bandwitch of 802.11g... which is nice for transferring big files across your network. (Gigabit Ethernet stomp it, speed wise, tho you'll have to run a cable!)

The ground has been doing the earthquake thing here in San Francisco, so we sent our fearless producer Neha Tiwari to the Berkeley Seismological Lab to get the latest on earthquake science.

Nintendo fans have a whole new Mario experience: Super Mario Galaxy will probably be the biggest title on the Wii this season... and with 40 galaxies, gorgeous art, and a whole new style of play, it's living up to the hype.

Ex Machina, Heather's producer pick this week is one of Patrick's favorite comics, too. Penned by Brian K. Vaughan, the series follows the exploits of retired super hero Mitchell Vaughan, who was elected Mayor of New York City post 9/11. Are all his powers -the ability to communicate with and control machines- gone? Not exactly...

"Power Down": is the latest trade paperback in the series... if you're starting from scratch, you'll want Ex Machina VOL. 1: THE FIRST HUNDRED DAYS.

Code Red is where Jessica tells you about her latest obsession... this week it's FFFFOUND!.com, a neat little place on the Internet where you can post and share your favorite images. The service also has the ability to recommend images it thinks you'll like based on your interests. This isn't another Flickr clone. The makers call it "an inspirational image-bookmarking experience!!" Jessica agrees.

John needs a cheap notebook, he's a "full-time student living off water, sunshine and take-out" that needs to talk with his family overseas. We've got ideas, from a Nokia's $250 N800 Internet Tablet to the name brand notebooks showing up at CompUSA for $650 with 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard drives... we're talking Sony and HP here, not no brands.

That said.. John, we know you don't trust posting your credit card info on the web... but, like Jessica said, it's time to get over that. If you like to shop local and support local business, that's awesome, but millions of folks shop online safely every day. And US federal law limits the liability of card holders to $50 in the event of theft, regardless of the amount charged on the card.

Why didn't we recommend a used notebook? Did you see that pile of parts Patrick had at the beginning of the show? That was a used notebook... make sure it works before you hand over any cash!

Yes, Andrew, you can use the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player as the HD DVD drive in your computer/Home Theater PC... if you want to play movies, you'll need Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra, $99, which can also play back Blu-ray movies, if you have a Blu-ray drive. (Only the Japanese version of Intervideo's WinDVD has HD DVD playback.)

One catch: you'll need an HDCP compliant graphics card and monitor to get the full HD resolution out of those pre-recorded movies. (Tho we hear you can get around that with a copy of SlySoft's AnyDVD. Email us if you're curious.

You'll also need a powerful system to play back HD DVD or Blu-ray movies. Run CyberLink's Blu-ray/HD DVD Advisor before you drop the cash on the software!

As Jessica pointed out, this isn't much of a bargain. You're paying $180 for the drive and $99 for the software (not to mention the whole HDCP ready graphics card question). You can buy Toshiba's HD-A2 for $230 at Walmart and lots of other stores. Sure, it's not the latest HD DVD Player (there's no 1080p out), but it does a pretty good job.

The online shoe store Jessica and Patrick mentioned? It's called Zappos.com.

We show you how to build one, and a master theremin player shows you what you can do with it.

While its eerie other-worldly sound may instantly recognizable, to most the Theremin's name and shape will draw blank stares. Based on amazing properties of electrical capacitance the Theremin is both a musical instrument and object lesson in the how electricity works.

Most if not all professionally used Theremins are produced by the Moog company. However, a number of companies Moog included build Theremin kits that you can assemble at home using copious amounts of solder and a soldering iron. For our purposes we went with the cheaper and less musical inclined PAiA Theremax kit. If you intend on following something approaching a career based on Theremin playing you're better off spending the additional cash on Moog's offerings.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Podcasts

Well here's a handy tip for ya!

Before you head out in your car... check out Radio-Locator. It's a website dedicated to listing all the radio stations both in the US and around the world.

Select your location by typing in your zip code or station call letters if you're in the US, or pick the drop down menu if you're overseas. Then click the “go” button.

In a few seconds you'll be presented with a list of radio stations in your area and more importantly the frequencies they're on. Find out which FM frequencies aren't being broadcasted on and use those for your FM Transmitter.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Mobile, Podcasts

Book-Adaptive and Book-Dependent Models to Accelerate Digitization of Early Music

The workflow for such digitisation projects also includes scanning and preprocessing, but the cost of expert human labour to correct automatic recognition errors dominates the cost of these other two steps. To reduce the number of recognition errors in the OMR process, we present an innovative application of maximum a posteriori (MAP) adaptation for hidden Markov models (HMMs) to build book-adaptive models, taking advantage of the new learning data generated from human editing work, which is part of any music digitization project. We also experimented with using the generated data to build book-dependent models from scratch, which sometimes outperform the book-adaptive models after enough corrected data is available. Our experiments show that these approaches can reduce human editing costs by more than half and that they are especially well suited to highly variable sources like early or degraded documents.
