MWRC: John Lam - RubyCLR and Ruby.NET

As dynamic languages gain popularity, it becomes more important to play well with others. There are a tremendous number of useful libraries that ship with the .NET platform that Ruby developers can use in their applications. RubyCLR is a bridge between the standard C-based implementation of the Ruby interpreter, and code that executes in the .NET Common Language Runtime. We will look at the design of RubyCLR to better understand how to implement a high-performance and high-fidelity interop layer between dynamic languages and statically typed libraries.

John Lam is a Program Manager on the Common Language Runtime team at Microsoft. He's the creator of RubyCLR, a high-performance bridge between Ruby and the .NET Common Language Runtime. He's bringing the love of Ruby out to the statically typed heathens at Microsoft and beyond.

PlentyOfFish.com How one man beat the big guys

Have you ever met someone who is simply amazing? Well I have and that someone is Markus Frind. A few years ago he was just another victim of the .com bust in Vancouver BC. An ASP developer he decided he needed to learn ASP.NET so he created a dating site called PlentyOfFish.com. Online dating is a very big business with large companies and multi-million dollar budgets but Markus and his one man operation took them on and today he is a force to be reckoned with.

ABSTRACT

Scala is a new programming language which fuses object-oriented and functional programming while staying completely interoperable with Java. In this talk, I give an introduction to Scala and demonstrate how it helps solving some hard problems in the construction of component systems.

Martin Odersky is a professor at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. His research interests focus on programming languages, more specifically languages for object-oriented and functional programming. His research thesis is that the two paradigms are just two sides of the same coin and should be unified as much as possible. To prove this he has experimented with a number of language designs, from Pizza to GJ to Functional Nets. He has also influenced the development of Java as a co-designer of Java generics and as the original author of the current javac reference compiler. His current work centers around the Scala programming language, which unifies FP and OOP while staying completely interoperable with Java and .NET.

Calling Web Services with ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript
