MonetDB/X100: a (very) fast column-store

Google Tech Talks
January, 15 2008

ABSTRACT

MonetDB/X100 is a second-generation column-store prototyped at CWI, targeted
at analysis-heavy data management tasks such as data warehousing and information retrieval. In this overview talk I will outline the research challenges, novel techniques and results from this project. The ideal is to close the existing performance gap between hand-coded applicationas and database systems using architecture- onscious techniques, and by carefully exploiting the bandwith strengs of modern hardware (and avoiding its latency weaknesses).

The novel techniques presented encompass expressing relational operators as vector operations, lightweight compression on the border between CPU cache and RAM, sequential-access optimized database design and I/O bandwidth sharing.

Speaker: Peter Boncz

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Databases, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google

Railscast: Action Caching

Action caching behaves much like page caching except it processes the controller filters. You can also make it conditional as seen in this episode.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Databases, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Ruby, Screencasts, Ruby On Rails

Sometimes you only want to cache a section of a page instead of the entire page. Fragment caching is the answer as shown in this episode.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Ruby, Screencasts, Ruby On Rails

High Performance Web Sites and YSlow

Google Tech Talks
November, 13 2007

ABSTRACT

Yahoo!'s Exceptional Performance Team has identified 14 best practices for making web pages faster. These best practices have proven to reduce response times of Yahoo! properties by 25-50%. They focus on the front-end, for example, why it's bad to use "@import" for including stylesheets and why ETags disable browser caching. In this talk I'll go in-depth on these best practices and the research behind them. I'll also demonstrate YSlow and do some live performance analysis of popular web sites.

Speaker: Steve Souders
Steve Souders holds down the job of Chief Performance Yahoo! at Yahoo! He's been at Yahoo! since 2000, working on many of the platforms and products within the company He ran the development team for My Yahoo! before reaching his current position.

As Chief Performance Yahoo!, he has developed a set of best practices for making web sites faster. He builds tools for performance analysis and evangelizes these best practices and tools across Yahoo!'s product teams.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Frameworks, Techtalks, Yahoo!, Google, Javascript, Lectures

Building Industrial Strength Performance Tools

Google Tech Talks
October, 26 2007

ABSTRACT

In this talk we will discuss the issues involved in building
industrial-strength performance tools. We first discuss the
requirements for such tools, and then the issues and tradeoffs
involved in compiling the targets for the tools. We then discuss data
collection, and the strengths and weaknesses of the different
technologies that can be used. We go on to discuss the issues involved
in data presentation, and how to show data in the user's model of the
code, rather than in the implementation model in which the data is
collected. Finally, we discuss the issues involved in testing such
tools.

Speaker: Marty Itzkowitz, Sun Microsystems
Marty Itzkowitz is Architect and Project Lead of Performance Tools at
Sun Microsystems, where he is responsible for various tools including
Sun Studio Performance Analyzer. Previous to Sun, Marty was Technical
Lead for Performance and Parallelization Tools at SGI, where he lead
the development of SGI SpeedShop and SGI Developer Magic.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Companies, Development, Broadcasting, Techtalks, Google, Lectures

Introducing YSlow

Dan and Jeremy of the Yahoo! Developer Network get Steve Souders of Yahoo's Exceptional Performance Team to walk through a demo of YSlow - a tool which analyzes web pages and tells you why they're slow based on the rules for high performance web sites. YSlow is a Firefox add-on integrated with the popular Firebug web development tool. YSlow gives you:

Performance report card

HTTP/HTML summary

List of components in the page

Tools including JSLint
