The Ruby language is growing exponentially, partially because it offers more flexibility than other more common languages. All of that flexibility comes at a price: Ruby has no compiler to catch certain kinds of basic mistakes. Automated testing makes those disadvantages obsolete. Now, testing is firmly ingrained in the Ruby culture.

In this session, we'll cover Test::Unit, the standard Ruby distribution that has shipped with Ruby for years. We'll also catch the built-in testing frameworks for Ruby on Rails, but we'll also go beyond that well-travelled ground to show you how the best Rails shops in the world test. You'll see the in-favor frameworks for code coverage (RCov), mocking (FlexMock), behavior driven tests (RSpec), and even point-and-click integration tests with Selenium.

Testing Distributed Systems with AJAX, XML - Lessons Learned from Google Checkout

Google Checkout is a good example of a distributed system involving several websites, the end user experience being powered by Ajax interactions, synchronous and asynchronous web services. Automating functional testing for that kind of architecture is a challenge. In this session we will provide an overview of the Google Checkout product and API, then present Mendoza, an open source testing framework that we use for functional testing of Checkout API integrations, using Selenium and a java test server. Mendoza has been designed in a generic way and can be leveraged to perform functional testing of any distributed system of similar architecture.

ASP.Net: Code Coverage of Automated Tests

This video demonstrates how to use code coverage as a metric for determining how effective our testing is of an ASP.NET Web application. After a test has completed, Visual Studio Team System reports on the percentage of code that was executed and indicates executed code with a green background and unexecuted code with a red background, making it easy to see the code that was covered by the test. You will also learn how you can use C# or Visual Basic to extend the automated test.

Hacking Digg With Firebug and jQuery

This is an adaptation of a presentation that John Resig gave while at Mashup Camp Boston. We’re going to take an introductory look at the Firebug Firefox Extension and the jQuery JavaScript Library - combining the two to build a reusable bookmarklet that can manipulate Digg Posts and Comments.

Ajax testing with Selenium using waitForCondition

An often-asked question on the selenium-users mailing list is how to test Ajax-specific functionality with Selenium. The problem with Ajax testing is that the HTML page under test is modified asynchronously, so a plain Selenium assert or verify command might very well fail because the element being tested has not been created yet by the Ajax call. A quick-and-dirty solution is to put a pause command before the assert, but this is error-prone, since the pause might be not sufficient on a slow machine, while being unnecessarily slow on a faster one.

A better solution is to use Dan Fabulich's waitForCondition extension. This tiny screencast is a short demo for interesting article about using waitForCondition extension for Selenium to test AJAX applications. So, please read this article first and then - watch short demonstration.
