The Joys and Pains of a Long Lived Codebase

Agile development practices and good Object Oriented Design principles are supposed to enable unending, gentle modification of an existing codebase. Is this really true, though? In the course of 5+ years developing and evolving an open source framework, I've learned a lot of painful lessons about the issues that retard code extensions and modifications. I've also learned a little bit about the design decisions that dramatically increased my ability to extend the code. In this talk I'll show several instances of how failing to heed design fundamentals introduced code viscosity, and how some strategic refactorings opened up the flood gates for new functionality.

Undoubtedly, the practice of Test Driven Development directly supports your ability to modify a system, but I found out the hard way that there are also plenty of ways to do it wrong. I'll share examples of high friction TDD and the changes in strategy I employed to reduce that friction to wring more value out of TDD.

The programming languages we use for .Net development have changed dramatically in 5 years. We can apply the new language features in C# 3.0 to improve the readability and structure of both our code and the way that we express unit test specifications.

Lastly, I'll discuss our changing expectations on framework usability and the resulting impact on design.

Bio
Jeremy is the Chief Software Architect for Dovetail Software in Austin, TX. Jeremy learned agile development practices as a .Net consultant at ThoughtWorks, one of the pioneers of agile development.
Testing Your Presentation Layer

Summary
In the Ruby world, no serious programmer would write an application without a comprehensive test suite. Unfortunately, the realities of integration testing the presentation layer of an Ajax-heavy web application has forced today's programmers to rely on kludges like HTML parsing in Ruby (which can't be used to test JavaScript comprehensively) or Selenium (which requires real-life browsers on every platform armed and ready). Screw that! With Johnson, a transparent Ruby to JavaScript bridge, you can test your JavaScript-heavy pages with ease. Because Johnson is embedded inside of Ruby, you'll be able to run tests directly in JavaScript, and then access JavaScript components in the tests (think Rails.dispatch_to("controller", "action")). I'll show you how to use Screw.Unit for browserless tests of your presentation layer. If you use continuous integration (and you should), you'll be able to easily catch bugs in your presentation layer without having to defer to a real browser running your tests.

Bio
Yehuda Katz is the plugins team leader of the jQuery project. He is also a core team member of the Merb and Ruby on Rails. Yehuda currently works at Engine Yard, where he works on the Merb Ruby framework.
Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) have been around for a very long time; however, the past 2 years have brought a resurgence of interest to the topic. DSLs are a great idea, but they are the most beneficial when used appropriately.

What is the Google Web Toolkit, what can you do with it, and why should you use it? Using our real world experience building Lombardi Blueprint as a case study this presentation will answer these questions.

We'll also touch on GWT's place in the development life cycle, including interaction with designers, the efficiency of the generated code, and present some useful design patterns and tips for making the best use of GWT.

Lombardi has been using GWT for nearly two years now. We've built a complete SaaS product, Lombardi Blueprint, and are using GWT extensively in our enterprise product, Teamworks, to provide both standalone Web UIs and in combination with Eclipse.

Some observers of historical trends have suggested that the Industrial Revolution could not have happened without coffee and tea. Heating water for a daily jolt of caffeine enabled workers to be more in control of their waking hours and also to have longer lives because drinking water that has been boiled means the consumer is less likely to swallow the toxic soup that early water supplies presented for consumption. Control of working and waking is what the Industrial Age was all about.

Is it time for a truly agile approach to how we work and live our lives? What would that mean?

No coffee/tea/Diet Coke/Red Bull? What are the real penalties we are paying for force fitting Industrial Age (plan-driven) living into agile development? Is there really a way to have it all?
In this session I'll discuss how a large telecommunications company has developed RESTful and Web-friendly services side-by-side with more traditional WS-* services.

Using Atom, AtomPub, caching, URI templates and microformats, the company has addressed a wide range of challenges, from standard integration tasks such as exposing legacy data to custom and vendor applications and services, publishing and consuming events, and service monitoring, to more dynamic, ad hoc and differentiating activities that expose resources to partners, customers and internal composite applications.

The session is of interest to architects and developers interested in or already using RESTful techniques within the enterprise. I'll discuss some of the criteria we used for making particular architectural and implementationdecisions and will demonstrate plenty of working code.

Bio
Ian Robinson is a Principal Consultant with ThoughtWorks, where he specializes in the design and delivery of service-oriented and distributed systems.
Software testing is a multidisciplinary enterprise. Its form and function is driven by the needs and perspectives of developers, testers, designers, managers, and other stakeholders. So how do you build a single tool that will satisfy them all? You don't; you build a toolchain.

Gallio is an open, extensible and neutral test automation for .Net. It provides the foundation for a rich suite of interoperable tools such as test frameworks, test runners, test case managers, test generators, test analyzers, IDE integration, build system tasks, reports, and more.

During this presentation, I will describe the architecture of Gallio and demonstrate a few ways that it can be extended to build new test tools. I will also discuss how MbUnit integrates with Gallio and how other test frameworks can do the same.

Bio
Jeff Brown is a Lead Software Engineer at Ingenio, where he is currently focused on software testing, development tooling and infrastructure.
