In this talk we’ll disassemble the lessons learned at AideRSS, and how we’ve optimized our Ruby infrastructure to handle millions of RSS feeds on a daily basis – building a spider, processing content, and optimizing process coordination and communication.

“Green Threads” and global interpreter lock (GIL) impose a lot of performance constraints on every developer using Ruby 1.8. We’ll explore the limitations of the MRI, the dreaded global interpreter lock (GIL), and look at the existing and upcoming alternatives – Ruby 1.9 concurrency model (Fibers and Actors) & JRuby threading. In similar fashion, we’ll walk through architectural patterns which can help us alleviate these problems: asynchronous and event driven processing, lazy data loading and processing, and common optimization paths for improving performance (ranging from syntactic optimizations, to writing custom C extensions).

You don’t have to leave the comfort of your Ruby shell to build a high performance system!

About Ilya Grigorik
Ilya Grigorik is the founder and CTO of AideRSS, Inc. After narrowly escaping certain death beneath an avalanche of unread RSS feeds, he knew that something must be done to protect future generations from the menace of information overload, and voila – AideRSS was born. An avid Ruby and RoR blogger (for which he received the ‘Ruby Hero’ award at RailsConf ’08), and a tinkerer at heart, Ilya is often found researching or evangelizing the latest web-development practices, software architectures, and web standards in general.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Development, Web Technologies

Which is the better smart phone: the iPhone 3G or Nokia's N95? How to catch up with all your RSS feeds on your mobile phone! What the heck is causing your machine to run at 100% all the time? And how does the Bad Ass Gaming PC handle games like BioShock and Crysis?

Many of you have written in about the inability for non-US residents to win the Bad Ass Gaming PC Giveaway. Unfortunately, different countries have different rules about giveaways and related contests. Now this isn't an issue on relatively inexpensive items like t-shirts, CDs, or posters. PCs are pricey items, however, and as you know, when $$$ is involved, things get complicated with the lawyers and bureaucrats. So until we have the money and resources to do a different contest for each and every country... which we don't... it's open to the US only.

We got several replies about a question we had in Episode 45 about getting replacement OS install discs for Dell machines stating that Dell does indeed give users replacement discs for their machines. All they need to do is call customer service or submit a support request through the website.

Our freebie download this week is SiSoft Sandra Lite. A great benchmark and diagnostic tool for you Windows XP/Vista machine.

Veronica and Pat share their opinions between the Nokia N95 and Apple's iPhone 3G. It's a battle between 5MP camera phone goodness and a slick touch screen interface.

Want to provide tech support for friends and family without driving out to their house? Then you need remote admin tools. While Windows XP and Vista have these already installed and free to use, Microsoft's particular implementation can be a bit confusing. If you want open-source options check out VNC. Although solutions like RealVNC cost money others like TightVNC are free. If you just want something that even a computer neophyte can use check out GoToMyPC. The downside is that you'll need to fork over $20 a month for a subscription.

Need a way to check out how your website looks in different browsers? Then surf on over to this week's website pick: Browsershots.

Just got that sinking feeling when all your honeymoon pics on your media card bring up an error message on your PC? Well Veronica and Pat cover a couple of options for recovering that info without relying on the supernatural, including VirtualLab Data Recovery.

And if your CPU continually runs at 100% in Windows, the problem may lie with a bug in Windows – surprise, surprise – and the answer may lie in this Microsoft support page.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Networking, Operating Systems, Web Technologies, Mobile, Podcasts

Skitch. Get the best price when you buy tech toys and tools. Skinning your laptop, cell phone, Wii, PS3, Xbox or PC! Buying a used PC. Regular phone vs. VoIP vs. Digital Phone

Steve's miffed: he wants us to point out when local shops probably won't have a product we review... and we've got some buying advice for the next time he heads for Frys, Best Buy, or RadioShack!

This week's Freebie Download Pick: AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0, free anti-virus tool that works great.

Alan sent in a video question, he's in search of something a little easier than using Print Screen or CMD-Shift-3 to take a screen shot... Veronica's all about Skitch, "one of my favorite new apps out there, and it makes editing and sharing screen grabs a total snap. Get it? Snap???"

Brian wants to build an audio studio for his dorm room. For under $1100. No problem: Veronica's got a list of gear that can get you some great audio for a lot less than that, starting with a good solid microphone, the beloved Shure SM58 and our favorite free audio editing and recording software, Audacity.

Bill's thinking about buying a used PC on craigslist.org, but doesn't want to get ripped off. We've got a list of things to keep an eye out for. (One thing we didn't mention: getting a bill of sale from the person you're buying from in case the machine is stolen!)

AT&T has (officially) announced pricing for iPhone 3G sevice... four plans, starting at $69.99 a month, says PCMag.com... is Veronica going to camp out for an iPhone 3G?

This week's Website We Just Can't Get Enough Of: freshAIRapps.com, a glorious repository of applications that run on Adobe Air. (That's the cross-platform runtime environment that enables programmers to make, for example, desktop applications like Twhirl, Patrick's fave Twitter client, and Snackr, a slick RSS reader. (It's also a wonderful resource for Adobe Air developers -- it has a tutorial section that covers all the basics for fledgling devs, as well as links to the tools you'll need to build the apps.)

What is the difference between regular phone, digital phone and VoIP? Anthony, we're glad you asked! POTS, VoIP, and Digital Telephony have more in common than you might think. Just don't ask us to explain how cell service works...

Fifty Free Songs? Sign up for a free trial at emusic.com/tekzilla! (And check out some of Veronica and Patrick's fave tunes!)

Patrick's friend is getting a new desktop for college and he wants to know "the best way to transfer his massive music collection from his XP computer to his new Vista rig." We've got some help for ya, including the scoop on copying files from his old hard drive that still has Windows on it.

Blu-ray on the Mac? Marshall is looking for something a tad less expensive than the $699 kit from MCE Tech. Fortunately, Roxio's Toast can burn Blu-ray disks... and the price of Blu-ray burners is down around $350. Now if 25GB BD-R disks would just drop in price!

Chris V. wants to personalize his notebook... it's too generic for his tastes. NO problem! There are skins from GelaSkins and skinit (skinit can decorate your PS3, Wii, guitar hero guitars, a laundry list of cell phones and MP3 players...).

Veronica had her Macbook Pro laser etched with a design she loves... you can learn how to etch just about anything with a VersaLaser in this episode of Systm.

In his presentation, recorded at QCon San Francisco, MuleSource architect Dan Diephouse explores ways to use the Atom Publishing Protocol (AtomPub) when building services in a RESTful way. He explains when to use and when to avoid using AtomPub, highlights its advantages, and shows where it doesn't provide a generic solution.

Bio
Dan Diephouse is an enterprise architect and open source developer, well-known as the founder of the XFire open source project (which has now become Apache CXF). He is a committer on several other open source projects, including Apache Abdera, XmlSchema, and Jettison.
