Google Developer Day US - KML Search and Dev. Maps Mashups

KML Search and Developing Maps Mashups Using KML/GeoRSS
Pamela Fox, Lior Ron
Have you been wondering how to drive traffic to that cool maps mashup you created recently? Simple, make it searchable. We now index geospatial content on the web and show it as search results to users on both Google Earth and Google Maps. We'll show you how to get your maps mashup crawled & indexed and how best to optimize your content for user discovery via search. Till now, KML was used to create layers in Google Earth and JavaScript based Google Maps API used for creating maps mashups. With the introduction of KML and GeoRSS support in the Google Maps API, you only need to define your data once in KML or GeoRSS. We'll also go in-depth about how defining your data in KML can help drive more traffic to your maps mashup site.

Speaker Bio:Pamela is a support engineer for the Google Maps API. She just graduated from USC with her CS masters, where she helped grow the video games department and dabbled in the 3d animation and linguistics departments. She's looking forward to helping developers innovate with the Maps API and combine them with many of Google's other amazing APIs.

Lior is the Product Manager for geo search in Google, where he is trying to help the world around us get mapped using the power of the masses. Before joining Google, Lior co-founded a medical device and a search startup, and served in various managerial positions in the Israeli Intelligence, where he worked on GIS and search problems. Lior holds an MBA from Stanford and BSc and MS from the Technion - the Israeli institute for technology.
Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Broadcasting, Google Dev Day, RSS, Web Services, Google, Lectures

RSS. ATOM. JSON. POX. REST. WS-*. What are all these terms, and how do they impact the daily life of a developer trying to navigate today's programmable Web? Join us as we explore how to consume and create Web services using a variety of different formats and protocols. Using popular services (Flickr, GData, and Amazon S3) as case studies, we look at what it takes to program against these services using the Microsoft platform today and how that will change in the future.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Development, Frameworks, MIX07, AJAX, RSS, Web Services, C#, .NET Framework

Away with Applications: The Death of the Desktop

Google Tech Talks
May 4, 2007

ABSTRACT

The computer desktop metaphor is ubiquitous, but how much work do we get done there? None! Time is entirely wasted navigating or shuffling content to the application in which we can finally work. What lessons can we learn from designing interfaces without the desktop and without applications? Is it even possible? And how does this apply to the Web? Currently, Web applications are often more usable than their desktop-based counterparts because each one does one thing and does it well. Desktop applications used to be the same way, but over time -- as applications grew to support the the users in the long tail -- each became a complex portmanteau of all possible features. If we are not careful, our Web apps will suffer the same conglomerated fate. Mashups and services help to solve the problem on the development end by freeing functionality from any particular application. But, there is currently no way to offer that wealth of possible functionality to users in a scalable way. Would it be nice to embed a dynamic map into your Gmail message? Sure. A Flickr slideshow? Sure. But for Google to offer those in addition to the hundreds of other possible options, would clutter the interface beyond usability. What's needed is a universal method of accessing functionality: a way of harnessing the power of services without the need for application developers to explicitly support them. I'll be demonstrating such a method.

The talk demonstrates that a ZUI plus a universal method of accessing functionality spells the death of the application-centric computing model and the desktop-design paradigms.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Conferences, Technologies, Companies, Broadcasting, Design, Techtalks, AJAX, RSS, Flash, Google, Lectures

LinuxConf.Au: Mozilla Extension Writing Tutorial

We propose a two part tutorial, the first covering the basics of writing an extension for Mozilla-based applications, and the second walking through a non-trivial extension which interacts with network services.

Extensions are a powerful way to extend and enhance Mozilla-based applications such as Firefox, Flock (which Ian and I work on), Epiphany, Songbird, etc. The technology behind them is also useful for developing standalone applications with rich web and network access, via the XULRunner platform.

The first, basic tutorial will cover:

XPCOM: The Mozilla component object model

XUL: The UI language

The way Javascript fits into this

Bundling and distributing and extension

Things to watch out for to prevent exploits

The more advanced tutorial will cover:

Interacting with a web service

Data storage

More complex UI usage

How to target multiple Mozilla-based applications

Security implications of dealing with web services

Both tutorials will guide the attendees through building a working extension. The advanced tutorial will involve some Flock specific features, but the extension will still work in Firefox, and only enable some things if it is run under Flock.

More information on what Flock is all about is available at http://www.flock.com/

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under OS, Conferences, Technologies, Development, Broadcasting, Windows, MacOS, Linux, LinuxConf.AU, RSS, Javascript, C and C++, Screencasts, Lectures
