Ruby Hoedown 2007: Building Games with Ruby

There's been a lot of discussion lately about putting Ruby to work in a corporate setting, but this talk is about Ruby at play. Andrea Wright will evaluate Ruby's potential as a platform for game programming, looking at a variety of frameworks for integrating graphics (2D and 3D) and analyzing the architecture of Ruby-based game servers. If you're not into gaming, there will still be plenty of take-aways in the areas of creating Ruby bindings for C and C++ libraries, defining elegant APIs, and metaprogramming. We'll look at some slick special effects, but we'll also take a good look at the slick code used to generate them.

Speaker Bio

Andrea O. K. Wright is an active member of Philly On Rails and enjoys organizing weekly 'Ruby Tuesday' tech lunch-and-learns for her colleagues at Chariot Solutions, a consulting firm based in Fort Washington, PA. A 14-year IT industry veteran, she currently works with Rails technology exclusively. At RailsConf 2007 she presented a talk about the respond_to mechanism and co-moderated a BoF about Hackety Hack (the Coder's Starter Kit) and RubyRails User Groups.

Ruby Hoedown 2007: Next-Gen VoIP Development with Ruby and Adhearsion

Adhearsion's creator Jay Phillips will discuss Ruby's work in VoIP and how even complete telephony novices can powerfully develop their own VoIP system with Asterisk and Adhearsion using pure-Ruby for all application logic. Attendees will see Jay develop a sophisticated Adhearsion application that integrates and handles calls from the public telephone network and integrates with a Rails application. Adding a voice component to a web application is much easier than you think!

Jay Phillips is an innovator in the spaces where sophisticated VoIP development falls apart and where Ruby rocks. As the creator of Adhearsion and its parent company Codemecca, Jay brings new possibilities to these two technologies through his work on the open-source Adhearsion framework.
