I'd like to give you a project suggestion for Systm: show us the proper method for upgrading an older wireless router with ddwrt firmware.

Frank in Tulsa

Great idea, especially since Patrick's long suffering Linksys WRT54G has been a touch flakey after the last firmware upgrade.

We just want to make one change: DD-WRT is great, but we're more into the Tomato Firmware upgrade... it's a tad less polished looking, but has slightly better quality of service contol than DD-WRT, allows boosting your your WiFi output, and has amazing bandwidth monitoring tools, which are great to keep in mind in wake of the new Comcast cap!

It runs on Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers, and, as Wikipedia puts it, is "based on the GPL sourcecode released by Linksys, but includes proprietary binary modules from the chipset manufacturer Broadcom. Portions of the code are licensed under the GNU General Public License, but the source code for the user interface is under a more restrictive license which forbids use without the author's permission." Which is to say, it's Open Source.

You can download the Tomato firmware at polarcloud.com/tomato.

The Tomato Firmware Wiki is incredibly helpful.

Here's the Tomato FAQ if you're curious.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Broadcasting, Technologies, Screencasts, Networking

Neither of these tools give you real-world information on what’s actually happening with your clients—how long are pages really taking to load, what’s the real cost of client-side execution, and what’s the impact of your loading or dependency chain. Learn how to safely add EL to any tech project in this episode of Systm!

Light without heat? It's called Electroluminesce when a material generates light directly from electrical current. It's found everywhere from aircraft control panels to Indiglo watches. It's a great way to light up your tech project, from backlighting LCD panels to prettying up a case mod. If you're not careful, however, you could damage the material, or, worse, give yourself a really really nasty shock.

In this episode of Systm, Dr. Kiki and David Calkins give you all the info you need to safely add EL to any project.

Wondering where to buy EL material? It's easy to purchase online from sites like Electro Luminescence Inc. but it's not super cheap. Think around $60 for an A4 sized sheet and toss in another $10 - $30 for a power inverter.

Some projects take a little longer than we planned... our DIY projector buildup is a stirling example. From broken LCDs to shipping delays caused by hurricanes, it's been an interesting project. The end result, tho, a scratch built 1080p projector with a 400W bulb that sells for under $50, and has a life expectancy of 20,000 hours, is pretty sweet!

The build, however, was tough.

First off, the kit we chose, Lumenlab's 120V S15 Mega-Kit is less a kit than a collection of parts you're not likely to find locally. It includes a pair of Fresnel lenses, the 400W 6500K bulb (and the ballast to power it) and the triplet lens use, ultimately, to focus the video on your wall.

That's all good. You then have to make a heap of design decisions based around the image size and distance you want to project (unless you decide to build a fox with a variable focal length), punch them into the (incredibly useful) FocalCalc II calculator, and get your favorite tool for measuring millimeters, 'cause precision is key for making this project work!

The other key is finding an LCD flat panel monitor you can scavenge that will work with a projector... many won't. If you can find a monitor listed in the LumenLab LCD Monitor Database you'll save yourself a ton of time (and cash) cracking open monitors that won't work!

We ended up buying a 15.4 inch WUXGA (1900x1200) panel and HDMI controller kit from Manhattan LCD: the bundled controller gave us HDMI input and HDCP compatibility so we can play Blu-ray discs, along with 1080p resolutions... sweet!

Before you try out this project for yourself, download the DIY Projector Guide and spend some quality time in the Projector Builder section of the Lumenlab Forums

It's a doable project but it takes some time and dedication... and patience, even without the comedy of errors we had!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Screencasts, Broadcasting

Our fave HDTV expert, PCMag.com's Robert Heron, joins us with a host of tricks for turning Vista's Windows Media Center into a great Home Theater PC

Building a Home Theater PC? Thinking about HDTV, Blu-ray, and how serious a GPU or CPU you need if you don't want to run video games on your HDTV? Can you get away with 1GB of memory? What about hard drive size, or the best tuner for HD?

You're gonna love this episode! Our fave HDTV expert, Robert Heron, from PCMag.com and DL.TV, joins Patrick with a host of expert ideas tips and tricks for turning your Windows Media Center into the ultimate media PC.

BTW, our new fave tool for playing Blu-ray movies in Windows Media Center is AcrSoft's TotalMedia Theater or TotalMedia Extreme...

Vista centric? Sure! It comes standard with Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate does a solid job playing DVDs, recording TV and handling your favorite audio and video files.

Looking to integrate Blu-ray playback into your WMC machine? Check out TotalMedia Theatre, $90, which not only plays well with the WMC interface, but still plays HD-DVD disks. It's definitely a more convenient than our former fave, CyberLink's PowerDVD 8 Ultra, $99.95, which bumps you out of the WMC GUI.

Vista... not so much? We also give you a list of WMC alternatives on the show... so you can turn just about any XP or Vista PC into an amazing Home Theater PC.

Today we'll be looking at the basics of installing FreeNAS, an open-source DIY NAS. So instead of spending money on off the shelf options why not save yourself some cash and make use of the stuff you already have and get a super customizable network storage device to boot.

Need a place to back up your most important files? MP3s or corporate documents, we build a FreeNAS and prove that Network Attached Storage doesn't have to be expensive. Article: Itching for an excuse to reuse that retired desktop PC or laptop sitting in your closet? Here's your chance! Today we're building a FreeNAS. This FREE Open Source DIY Network Attached Storage software means you can save some cash by recyling stuff you already have, instead of spending big bucks on an off the shelf box. On the show our beloved Series Producer Roger Chang steps out from the control room and in front of the camera to walk you step by step through building this super customizable network storage device. FreeNAS makes it easy to set up: you'll see how little time and effort it really takes!

All you need to build your own is a copy of the FreeNAS installer, and a PC. It doesn't take much of a PC: just 96MB of RAM a NIC, and a CD-ROM to install from along with a hard drive, and you're ready to go. Tho you'll probably want at least one fat new hard drive to stash your stuff on!

FYI: FreeNAS isn't the only option if you're intent on rolling your own NAS. Other options include Openfiler a great alternative to FreeNAS.

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Screencasts, OS, Broadcasting

With Blu-Ray drives selling for as little as $129 it makes sense to include one in your next HTPC build. You'll get access to true 1080p content unmolested by digital TV providers and provide justification for that pricey HDTV you just bought. Adding Blu-Ray isn't rocket science, but it does have its share of potential pitfalls.
Episode 54, Super Cooling Your PC, triggered a pretty big response from y'all, so we decided to delve deeper into water cooling, primarily hooking our radiator up to a higher flow pump and testing it against the AquaGate 80's water block along with a dedicated water block.

Then we fried our testbed. (Warning: Coolant and motherboards don't mix well.)

It only took a few drops, but they somehow managed to soak in between our Core 2 Duo and the Socket T (aka the LGA755) on our motherboard. The CPU, tho scorched, still works, but the Mobo was DOA. We'll say it again: coolant and electronics don't mix well.

Our apologies, on the delay, our (final) water cooling episode (for now) will be up late this week!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Screencasts, Broadcasting

Which is best for running Windows applications inside of OS X? Watch the show and find out!

There's nothing wrong with running Windows on your OS X machine: all you need is Boot Camp, right?

Wrong. There's a better way: virtualization software, such as the Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware's Fusion.

If you run virtualization software, you can run Windows operating systems like XP and Vista -inside- of OS X. Features like "Coherence" or "Unity Mode" even let you run a Windows application as if it were just another OS X app.

But which software should you choose?

Our friend Tom Merritt, the host of CNET's Buzz Out Loud has spent more time playing around with virtualization software and OS X than anybody we know... so we invited him to join us and show off his favorite tools and tricks for running Windows (and Windows applications!) on your Mac!

Now all we have to do is check out VirtualBox and see if this open source tool for running Windows in OS X works just as well!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under MacOS, OS, Windows, Broadcasting, Screencasts, Technologies

I think we've got all your water cooling questions answered!

Dozens of emails came in after we bolted a car radiator to a water cooling kit in Episode 54... we tried to answer all of 'em in this episode, where we up the ante on our water cooling system and see how low we can drop our processor temperature.

What kind of questions? Ambient room temperatures vs. cooling, the accuracy of our testing software, the impact of high flow pumps and superior water blocks... we try 'em all, and come to a basic conclusion: you can drop your temps big time.

Just be prepared to spend some cash doing it... and try and keep your motherboard dry!

Back in Episode 48 we showed you how to water cool your PC. Perfect if you want to overclock your system. But what happens when we bolt on a car radiator to that very same water cooling system?

It all started with a snarky friend back East that took great pains to call and say, "Nice intro to water cooling, but I expected something a little more over the top!"

OK... we can do that.

A quick trip to the local auto recycler and we had a radiator from an old Dodge in our hands.

Now we can find out what happens if you radically increase the size of the heat exchanger attached to the water block that cools your CPU in a water cooled PC.

We've also learned quite a bit about "proper thermal conductor installation" since Episode 48, specifically, how Arctic Silver wants you to apply the spiffy thermal grease we use between our processors and heat sinks. Check the the instructions on their website, they vary between AMD and Intel and by model!

Annnnnd, while we're rooting around with 5/8 inch hose and a car radiator, we throw a Zalman Zalman CNPS9500 AT air cooler and compare the temperate results for all three.

Which combo did the best job keeping our CPU temps down? You'll have to watch the show to find out!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Technologies, Screencasts, Broadcasting

Systm Episode 53 - The diyMod: Ultimate Audio or a Dead iPod

The diyMod skips the headphone amp in your iPod to get pure audio straight from the source... this is one of the toughest mods we've ever attempted!

In the tradtion of Epic Failure on Systm... the diyMod, an audiophile hardware hack for the iPod, doesn't really rank. We -did- have it working. We just couldn't keep this slick Do It Yourself take on Red Wine Audio's $250 iMod running long enough to properly test it. Or get the sacrificial iPod Nano buttoned up again. (It's not dead, just a bit... naked.)

The buzz around this mod for the iPod is pretty huge. Why? Many models of the iPod contain a Wolfson MicroelectronicsWM8975 CODEC. This chip converts the digital audio stored on your iPod's drive into the analog audio your ears can hear. Serious audio geeks believe the WM8975 does a spectacular job.

They also tend to believe the amplifers on the iPod don't do a very spectacular job of making that sweet sound loud enough to hear on your headphones.

The solution? Bypass the onboard amplifiers in your iPod and run the audio out from that Wolfson DAC to a quality headphone amp or your home stereo.

In this episode we make some spudgers so we can crack open a couple of iPods, solder with the tiniest wire we've ever used and get all kinds of excited. (That 30 guage wire might have been the problem... Patrick's working with some sturdier stuff in a new attempt to make his diyMod work for more than 20 minutes!)

Spend some serious time reading The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G!. Joneeboi has done a great job getting the info together on how to do this... but, as we learned, the difference between reading about this hack and performing it is pretty major. (The thread is over 113 pages long... lots to learn there!)

Opening your iPod is the easy part: iFixit's Guides are your best friends if you're opening an iPod. Or an iPhone or a Macbook/Macbook Pro... they sell repair parts, and they're the best step by step instructions we know of.

Inside, you'll be soldering wires to SMD: Surface Mount Devicesso tiny you'll be begging for a magnifying glass.

You'll need to modify the iPods headphone outputs or Dock Connector, to get the audio outside the case.

And, of course, you'll need to put the whole thing back together, and fabricate a cable with a pair of 47uF capacitors between the iPod and your headphone amp or preamp.

Patrick's still hammering away on this one, 'cause he wants to hear what it sounds like first hand... he's also

PS: if you spend a lot of time listening to music through headphones/earphones/earbuds, the Head-Fi.org forums are awesome. Go check 'em out!

PPS: Let's be clear: this is not the iMod, that's something Red Wine Audio does for $250... and judging from the look on Patrick's face while he was working on that iPod nano, it's $250 well spent if you don't enjoy starting at tiny parts until your eyeballs are ready to fall out of their sockets!

Read more about this video…

Want to control this feed contents? Sign up here and create your own feed!

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Screencasts, Broadcasting, Technologies

Mike wanted a DIY "cable that will allow my iPod / iPhone to charge and give me a audio line out connection."

Sounds simple enough, but Mike didn't want to try it out on his $500 iPhone.

In 20/20 hindsight, we don't blame him: Patrick nearly bricked his iPhone while puzzling out how to get the audio out to work on a home brew Dock Connector using an easy to solder PodGizmo PodBreakout... the pins on the Dock Connector are tiny, and not much fun to experiement with.

We're sticking with the Pinouts.ru iPod Pinout charts in the future... the iPodLinux.org charts are numbered backwards... mixing the two caused us some serious pain.

Did we mention the pain of soldering those tiny pins on the Dock Connecor? We've already bricked three... good thing we ordered six.

Sparkfun Electronics isn't the only source of Dock Connectors: Ridax offers both DIY Dock Connectors and an excellent array of (pricey, but useful) connectors and extenders.

Did we say DIYMod on the show?
