he focus of this session is on configuring your own Custom Search engine to let your users search the sites and topics that are relevant to you. We will discuss how to create dynamic search engines using Linked Custom Search and how to use XML to programmatically provision custom search engines. If you work on distributed systems, you try to design your system to keep running if any single machine fails. If you're ambitious, you might extend this to entire racks, or even more inconvenient sets of machines. However, what if your entire datacenter falls off the face of the earth? This talk will examine how current large scale storage systems handle fault tolerance and consistency, with a particular focus on the App Engine datastore. We'll cover techniques such as replication, sharding, two phase commit, and consensus protocols (e.g. Paxos), then explore how they can be applied across datacenters.

The Eyes-Free Project (which you might have seen featured by the New York Times) aims to enable fluent eyes-free use of mobile devices running Android. Target uses range from eyes-busy environments like in-car use to users who can't or don't want to look at the visual display. Hear from Charles Chen and T.V Raman from the Eyes-Free team about the Text-To-Speech (TTS) API, as well as some of the UI innovations for taking advantage of the touch screen without needing to actually look at the screen. This talk will present a brief high-level overview of the TTS library and the stroke dialer input method, then dive into the details of how you can use these technologies in your own Android applications. Your hosts will then walk you through building a real eyes-free app, and give you a sneak peek at some of the upcoming features in store for the Eyes-Free Project.

Recently, Google Data APIs have implemented new technologies in order to make applications and communications with Google Data APIs more efficient. We'll present these new technologies, including ETags, Partial Get and Update, and a new compact JSON format, and show how you can use them to improve your applications. We'll demonstrate these features by showing an example built on top of the Google Photos (Picasa Web Album) API.

Some applications require high-performance client-side computation. Native Client is a technology for running native code in web applications, with the goal of maintaining the browser neutrality, OS portability, and safety that people expect from web apps. This talk will give a brief overview of the architecture of Native Client. We'll then look at some specific example applications as well as strategies for how to use native code to handle compute intensive tasks within web applications using SRPC, Shared Memory and NPAPI.
