Transforming Software Architecture with Web as Platform

Software architecture has become heavily influenced in recent years by the largest software system in the world: The Web. While the foundations of much of what we understand about software architecture haven't changed, the living laboratory of the Web has created a steady and impressive stream of innovations and ideas that are just now being fully appreciated. Questions such as how to design our systems, which methods are best to make them composable and extensible, how much of an architecture should be pliable and who should be able to influence it are all subjects for which the modern era of the Web has offered up compelling and often startling new approaches.

This session will take a comprehensive look at how the "Web as Platform", one of the foundational concepts of the Web 2.0 era, is changing the discipline and practice of software architecture in important and significant ways that architects and technical leads must know today. Not just an exercise in examination of current trends, attendees will take away useful and immediately applicable methods for improving and extending the discipline of software architecture with Web approaches that can put to work in the enterprise or anywhere else.

Bio
Dion Hinchcliffe is an internationally recognized business strategist and enterprise architect. He was founding Editor-in-Chief of Web 2.0 Journal and is current Editor-in-Chief of Social Computing Magazine. He is also the founder and owner of the popular Web 2.0 UniversityTM as well as The Enterprise 2.0 TV Show.

About the conference
QCon is a conference that is organized by the community, for the community. The result is a high quality conference experience where a tremendous amount of attention and investment has gone into having the best content on the most important topics presented by the leaders in our community. QCon is designed with the technical depth and enterprise focus of interest to technical team leads, architects, and project managers.

In many cases, these forces have driven the deployment of new technologies and the adoption of new behaviors, adding multiple layers to an already complex set of issues that must be navigated. Architects are searching for a solution that helps manage this complexity. SOA, Software as a Service, Web 2.0, and Edge are all elements of the solution, but are they the complete picture? Are they a sufficient answer to the issues? Can they be used together in a productive and efficient fashion? What matters most? SPARK was a high-level collaborative workshop hosted by Microsoft to examine "the issues that matter most" in the practice of strategic architecture and produce guidance for the industry as a whole. This session provides a recap of the workshop, a review of the materials produced by the workshop, and an opportunity to direct questions to some of the workshop participants.

HOP: A Language for Programming the Web 2.0

Every day, electronic equipment becomes cheaper and smaller than the day before. At the same time, computer networks cover larger and larger areas of the planet. Combining these two technological improvements is likely to give birth to new application fields such as the "internet of things" or the "ambient intelligence". However developing the innovative applications made possible by this new infrastructure is currently challenging. Firstly, because they are new and yet difficult to imagine. Secondly, because from a computer scientist perspective, suitable tools are lacking.

To help face this problem, we have conceived the HOP programming language whose syntax and semantics are specially crafted for programming distributed "diffuse" applications. HOP is built on top of standard Web technologies, which it uses as the components of a virtual machine. This provides HOP with several assets such as portability, availability, and versatility.

In order to demonstrate that HOP, and its SDK, can be used to program realistic applications, we have started to develop a number of diffuse HOP applications. During the presentation we will present two of them and we will sketch some aspects of their implementation. The first one is a ubiquitous home media center. The second one is a diffuse home automation system.

Speaker: Manuel Serrano
Manuel Serrano is a Senior Scientist at Inria Sophia-Antipolis. Involved with Lisp and Scheme since the early 90's he has worked on optimizing compilers for Scheme, and in 1994 he received his PhD. His thesis, titled "Toward a portable and efficient compilation of functional languages," describes a process that initially compiled Scheme to C code (bigloo). Maintaining and developing Bigloo has been an important part of Dr. Serrano's research activities. In 2000, and 2002, two new back-ends have been added to Bigloo: a first one for compiling to the JVM, a second one for compiling to the CLR. While a professor at the University of Nice in southern France, he developed Bee, which attempts to provide a richer development environment for Scheme by taking advantage of the language's advanced features. It also provides a symbolic debugger, a memory debugger, a performance profiler, a memory profiler, indexing facilities, and so on, and has been described in several research papers.

Manuel Serrano joined Inria Sophia Antipolis in 2001. Since 2005, his research focuses on the development of diffuse applications for the Web 2.0, particularly with the creation of a new programming language 'Hop'. Hop is meant for programming applications such as ubiquitous multimedia systems, house automation systems, desktop replacements, etc. Its first version has been released in June 2006. Ever since, new versions have been released approximately every 6 months.

Consumerization of enterprises: A Security Conundrum

No one can argue that consumerization is happening within today's enterprises. This is the first time in the computing history that consumer technologies are driving innovation and technology adoption, rather than taking a back seat to enterprise and military technologies. Consumer technologies bring a rich, interactive user experience, which is a powerful draw for workplace adoption. Businesses are also finding compelling use of consumer technologies to foster innovative and new B2C and B2B markets.

Today, 25% of all organizations have an enterprise priority to implement Web 2.0 technologies in 2008. But on a larger scale, the use of consumer technologies in enterprises remains spotty and limited. One of the biggest challenges is security and the level of management control to which enterprises are accustomed. This talk presents a vision of full consumerization of enterprises, with ubiquitous adoption of consumer technologies and a seamless experience between consumer and enterprise apps. We'll investigate security implications of such a vision, and more specifically, technological advances that would be needed to support such a vision. The author intends this to be an interactive discussion rather than a presentation and is seeking audience members' feedback to the "full consumerization" vision.
Accessibility 2.0 is now a hot topic on the Web and we would like to move from a world where AJAX applications were a straight No-No with respect to blind users to a world where these same technologies are used to enhance their usability for everyone.

Google-AxsJAX is an Open Source framework for injecting usability enhancements into Web 2.0 applications. In this talk, Charles Chen and T. V. Raman will give a hands-on tutorial on using AxsJAX. The tutorial will cover the following:

A brief introduction to the additional opcodes introduced by W3C ARIA to the assembly language of the Web (AKA HTML+JavaScript).

AxsJAX library abstractions built on the above that help Web developers generate relevant feedback via the user's adaptive technology of choice.

Steps in creating fluent eyes-free interaction to Web applications, including enabling rapid access to parts of a complex Web page.

The tutorial will provide a step-by-step walk through in defining AxsJAX enhancements to a Web page including:

An overview of the developer tools we use.

Discovering pain-points in Web interaction and designing improvements iteratively.

And time permitting, we might even demonstrate how Raman now makes up for all the time he save thanks to an efficient eyes-free auditory user interface by playing JawBreaker and reading XKCD via their AxsJAXed versions.

Note that writing AxsJAX enhancements to Web applications can help you win cool swag and bragging rights! The goal of this hands-on tutorial is to help you get there faster!

On Friday, YT content Hank & John Green (Brotherhood 2.0) are visiting the Chicago office. They are currently ranked #49 - Most Subscribed (All Time) - Directors in YT -- just 7 positions behind Oprah and 2 positions behind Google. The Vlog has been featured on BBC radio and the Wall Street Journal and has a dedicated fan base of over 20,000 viewers (called Nerdfighters.)

Check out this sample video.

Join us for this Q session on: their subscribers / fans and how they interact with them; how the last 1.5 years of video blogging has been and being part of YT / online video phenomena, etc.

Background: Hank and John Green, Brothers for over 27 years, decided not to write to each other during all of 2007, and instead make daily video blogs.

Though the project "Brotherhood 2.0" has now ended, they decided to keep updating the YouTube channel at least once a week. Additionally, the community of nerdfighters that they helped create is now stronger than ever, and lives at: http://www.nerdfighters.com

Speaker: John Green
THE LONG BIO FOR BOOK REPORTS, THE INSANELY CURIOUS, AND/OR STALKERS

John Green is a writer living in Indianapolis, Indiana (by way of New York and Chicago) with his outrageously wonderful wife, Sarah. John's first novel, Looking for Alaska, was published in 2005. It won the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in Young Adult literature, was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize, and received many other accolades, which are discussed at some length here. The movie rights to Looking for Alaska were acquired by Paramount, and Josh Schwartz (creator of The O. C. and a very nice guy) is currently working on the screenplay. It has also been translated into 13 languages.

John's second novel, An Abundance of Katherines, came out in September 2006. Katherines was a Michael L. Printz Honor Book and was also a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize.

John grew up in Florida before moving to Alabama to attend boarding school--and yes, that school bears some physical resemblance to Alaska's Culver Creek. After graduating from college in 2000, John worked for six months as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. It was there that he started thinking about last words and the book that became Looking for Alaska.

John lived for several years after that in Chicago, where he worked for Booklist Magazine, a fantastic book review journal. While there, he reviewed hundreds of books of all varieties--from picture books about Confucius to romance novels about Confucius (really!). His reviewing specialties included the literary fiction, books about Islam, and books about conjoined twins. John has read 11 books about conjoined twins (there are, it is worth pointing out, more books about conjoined twins currently in print than there are actual conjoined twins currently alive. In this sense, conjoined twins are like serial killers). John's book criticism has also appeared in The New York Times Books Review.

John has also written for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," and for Chicago's public radio station, WBEZ. If you want to be inundated with jokes about John's ex-girlfriends, peruse the "On the Radio" archives. Katherines readers will be unsurprised to learn that John often writes about trivial intellectual pursuits for mental floss magazine.

What else? John and his brother Hank created the year-long video blog Brotherhood 2.0. He is a total Dumpee. He likes sushi and country music and Nintendo. (Note: Those words, in that order, have never appeared on the Internet.)

Speaker: Hank Green
http://www.ecogeek.org/

During the entire year of 2007, my brother John and I ceased text-based communication, and instead made daily video blogs. Brotherhood 2.0 videos have now been viewed over 4 million times.

The Vlog has been featured on BBC radio and the Wall Street Journal and has a dedicated fan base of over 20,000 viewers (we call them Nerdfighters.)

This paper focuses on the problem of modeling how social networks accomplish tasks through peer production style collaboration. We propose a general interaction model for the underlying social networks and then a specific model (iLink) for social search and message routing. A key contribution here is the development of a general learning framework for making such online peer production systems work at scale. The iLink model has been used to develop a system for FAQ generation in a social network (FAQtory), and experience with its application in the context of a full-scale learning-driven workflow application (CALO) is reported. We also discuss methods of adapting iLink technology for use in military knowledge sharing portals and other message routing systems. Finally, the paper shows the connection of iLink to SQM, a theoretical model for social search that is a generalization of Markov Decision Processes and the popular Pagerank model.

Read more about this video…

Want more on these topics?
Browse the archive of posts filed under Web 2.0, Broadcasting, Science, Lectures, Computer Science
